What should I be when I grow up?

My teacher gave us a career test in school that was supposed to tell us what we would be good at based on our personality and interests. My results were all over the place! How am I ever going to know what I want to be when I grow up?

Don’t worry too much girlie, loads of people your age don’t know what they want to be, and a lot of those who do will change their mind when they get older.

So what’s the point?
Those career tests are meant to get you thinking about what kind of field you’d like to go into, but don’t take them too seriously. If you answered all the questions honestly, then you’re almost guaranteed to get results all over the place because there are probably a bunch of things you love to do in the future.

The next step
You have to choose a career that captures what you love most, not necessarily everything you love, and that’s why the test can be a bit misleading. Remember when you were young and you tried out a bunch of different activities, like figure skating, ballet, track, soccer and swimming to see what you liked. When you grow up you stick to the activity you like most and the ones you weren’t as into fall away slowly. Right now just focus on experiencing as much as you can, and then when you find something you really love you won’t feel so lost anymore.

Live for the moment
For now don’t worry about what job you’ll get when you’re older, just take classes you like. Take art if you love to draw, or sign up for a dance class if you love being active. It just takes one class or one inspirational teacher to show you what you want to do, so try not to worry too much until that happens. Good luck, and I’m sure whatever career you choose will be great!
