Easy ways to switch up your at-home routine

It's easy to get stuck in a rut when replicating the same routine day after day—so why not throw your quarantine calendar for a loop? Establishing an at-home regime provides a sense of organization within your household—which is much needed considering today's global chaos—but can also be limiting.

"One way to be adaptive to our current situation is to consider how we can be flexible, breaking from some of the notions of schedules and structure," explains Dr. Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine. By following the same patterns, we're closing ourselves off to new experiences that energize our existence. Not to mention, sticking to the same activities can become quite boring, and over time, we forget the value that comes from our everyday actions. Outdoor activities may be at a halt, but trying new things inside manages to keep you on your toes nonetheless. Ditch daily habits and follow our tips below on how to switch up your system.

Try a new recipe.

Stuck on a signature plate of spaghetti? Designate each day of the week to a different cuisine to mix up your menu.

Watch a new workout video.

Upping your fitness game is all about consistency, but doing the same exercises each day won't target all muscle groups. Make sure to alter your workout every week to tone the abs, legs, arms and more areas of the body.

Swap out your stay-at-home style.

Lounging around in PJs all day long can become *so* tedious. Make a plan to play dress up, where you pull the fanciest pieces from your closet and strut around your home for the fun of it.

Take on a new artistic endeavor.

No, Netflix doesn't count as art. Purchase a paint set or model clay to let your creativity thrive.

Color your hair.

Feel free to add subtle highlights or even a bold hue to your strands; thanks to social distancing, hardly anyone will notice if you mess up. For a less drastic, fail-proof change, clip-in extensions are always an option.

Reorganize your room.

Switch out old picture frames and KonMari your clothing drawers to give your bedroom an instant update. Swapping out your sheets and comforter can also feel refreshing when you walk through the door.
