9 iconic quotes from our favorite classic rom-coms
There's *so* much to love about our favorite rom-coms—from the quotable dialogue to the adorable meet-cutes to the satisfying finales. But they also feature meaningful messages that are about way more than romantic love. Read on to remind yourself of these inspirational life lessons!
Warning: spoilers ahead!
"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear" -The Princess Diaries (2001)
Princess Mia is all ready to give up the throne of Genovia until she discovers a special letter from her late father. As she rethinks her decision, Mia realizes that the opportunity to turn her words into actions outweighs her fears of being a princess in the public eye. Her choice to put the people of Genovia ahead of her personal problems proves that she'll be a powerful but fair ruler. Plus, we can only hope that she'll make M&M pizza a Genovian staple.
"It all boiled down to one inevitable conclusion: I was just totally clueless." -Clueless (1995)
#relatable, anyone? We all felt heard when pretty, popular and seemingly perfect Cher confessed this during her climactic stroll around Beverly Hills. Realizing you love someone but they like someone else? Messing up something you assumed was in the bag? Cher's been there. This theatrical moment is the crux of the entire movie (that iconic fountain scene tho), reminding us that *nobody* is perfect.
"Lara Jean, you've got to tell people how you feel when you feel it. You can't just sit up in your room writing love letters that you're never going to send out." -To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018)
If you needed a sign to tell your crush how you feel, then this is it. Lara Jean's life took an *entirely* different path when Kitty secretly mailed out her personal love letters. But her adorable love story with Peter K. is proof that you gotta live life to the fullest and let people know how you really feel. Who knows? You might end up with your very own Peter K.—the one who remembers that you don't like to drive in snow and always saves the popcorn before starting pillow fights.
"Don't let anyone ever make you feel like you don't deserve what you want. Go for it." -10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
There are *way* more than ten things we love about this flick, and Patrick's pep talk is definitely one of them. After Cameron is heartbroken that his crush Bianca loves someone else, Patrick reminds him that he shouldn't let anyone else get in the way of his dreams. This gives Cameron the courage to get back in the game and continue getting to know Bianca. Remember Patrick's ultra-confidence (and his bleacher serenade of "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You") the next time you feel down about going after your dreams.
"Well, Jenna, I know I made a lot of mistakes, but I don't regret making any of them...because if I hadn't have made them, I wouldn't have learned how to make things right." -13 Going on 30
Our parents may be in a different generation, but they still have so much wisdom to share (plus, they make the best smiley face pancakes). In 13 Going on 30, adult Jenna asks her mom if she would choose to have a do-over in life. When Mrs. Rink confesses that she wouldn't change *anything*, Jenna is shocked and confused. But her mom has a point—making mistakes and learning from them is just part of the journey. After all, trying something new and failing is much better than never trying anything at all.
"I know that a life without love is no life at all." -Ever After (1998)
Who knew a rock paper scissors game could be so romantic? We were rooting for Danielle and Prince Henry from the start in this historical twist on the classic Cinderella story. And when wise Leonardo da Vinci reminds Prince Henry of the true meaning that comes with human connections, we couldn't help but agree. Love comes in many forms, like the close-knit bond between Danielle and her dad in this film. The same is true for you, from your close relationships with your fam and pets to your tight ties with your besties.
"Nobody should be forced to do things they don't wanna do. Take it from somebody who knows." -Ella Enchanted (2004)
We're so inspired by fierce and strong women like Ella of Frell, who stands up for herself even in the face of an obedience curse. Headstrong Ella isn't afraid to tell handsome Prince Char exactly what she thinks of him, and that everyone in their kingdom should be free to pursue their passions. Her resolve to do what's right for herself *and* others, even in the face of danger, is amazingly refreshing. Ella's quest is proof that you should go after your dreams, and that the courage you need is often right inside of you.
"You must always have faith in people, and most importantly, you must always have faith in yourself." -Legally Blonde (2001)
Elle's bubbly and bright personality makes her unforgettable to everyone she meets. But her unwavering optimism is tested when she attends Harvard Law School and faces catty cliques, tough teachers and grueling work. Even so, Elle is committed to take on the challenge because she believes so strongly in her ability to succeed. In the end, her unique experience and outlook helps her achieve victory—while looking fab along the way.
"Perhaps the greatest risk any of us will ever take is to be seen as we really are." -Cinderella (2015)
There have been countless takes on the classic Prince Charming and glass slipper trope, and this spinoff is one of the most captivating ones. When Ella tells Prince Kit who she truly is, she can't disguise herself in a gorgeous gown and sparkling shoes. Though it was undoubtedly nerve-racking to be honest, the pair develop a deeper connection and learn that they will support each other no matter what. If you're willing to open up to your friends and family, chances are they'll feel encouraged to be themselves, too.
