How to be more creative (in five easy steps)

Ready to redo your room? Craft dreamy DIYs? Pursue a passion project? Whatever your goals, creativity is essential for your health and happiness. That's why we snagged OOLY's latest DIY drop (get your box here!) and asked our most artsy and authentic GL girls for all their best inspo. Read on for your step-by-step guide to upping your imagination and innovation...

Step 1: Take time to unwind.

We know, we know: Your planner is packed. But even during your busiest weeks, scheduling downtime is a *must*. Studies show that participating in creative projects like crafting actually calms and focuses your brain. So the next time you press pause on your paper and pick up a blank OOLY sketchbook in its place, know this: You're actually making yourself more likely to succeed.

Take it from GL girl Tatum, who knows how necessary it is to kick back during her busy dance season. "You have to rest and restore to perform at your best," she explains. We're here for it.

Step 2: Don't be afraid to start simple.

"My favorite place to begin is with a blank piece of paper and my OOLY markers," dishes GL girl Parker. Doodling isn't just for daydreamers—it can be an integral first part to your creative process. Start with basic drawings (say sunshine, flowers or even your name and add increasingly complex patterns from there). It might be a masterpiece—or you might just benefit from letting your mind (and markers) wander.

Step 3: Lean into the things you love.

GL girl Kylee is obsessed with animals—which perfectly blends into her artsy go-to. "My sister and I use the OOLY air dry clay kit to make adorable (and tiny!) kittens and pandas," she says. "They turn out so cute and make amaze decorations, too."

Heart science? Sketch your next incredible invention (dream big!). Performing is more your thing? Write lyrics to a song. The most important part: Let go of the need to be flawless and simply let yourself have fun

Step 4: Think ~outside~ the box.

Don't think you have everything you need for your project? Nbd, says GL girl London: "One thing I heart about the OOLY color-changing markers is that they leave room to surprise myself with what I'm creating." So break out of your routine and try a new color, a new medium or even a new space to work (like outside!). You never know what can happen.

Step 5: Share your process with the world.

Hang your painting in your room! Post your DIY tutorial on social media! Put together sweet gratitude gifts for your pals! "I love making friendship bracelets for my crew," explains GL girl Alexa. "Crafting helps me relax *and* I love surprising my BFFs." No matter your vibe, it feels good to put your work out into the world—so share your creations (and be sure to tag @girlslifemag and @weareooly, ofc).
