Five things to do the day after a breakup

Breakups are tough to get through. Seeing a relationship you’ve spent months (or even years) building fall apart is heartbreaking, but take heart: you will survive. Just take it one day at a time...starting with that first morning. Here are five things you should do to survive the day after your breakup.

1. Let yourself cry.
You don’t have to force yourself to get over your ex crazy quickly. It’s going to take time. Take today to express how you feel, whether that’s through tears, screams, writing, boxing or ranting to your bestie. The point is, don’t hold in your emotions. You are allowed to be sad.

2. Invite your closest friends and family over
Remember, you don’t have to go through this alone. Lean on your friends and family, even if you don’t feel like being around anyone. To fight the loneliness, plan a sleepover filled with funny movies, ten different types of ice cream and deep conversations.

3. Turn off your phone
Stay off of social media and avoid contact with your newly ex. Trust us, it’s better this way. You don’t want to post something on Twitter you’ll regret later,  and you *def* don’t want to read anything your ex is posting either. You two need time apart to heal.

4. Create a list of your fav things about yourself
A girl’s self-esteem takes a hit after a breakup. Thoughts like, “Why didn’t he want me?” and “What did I do wrong?” can start popping up, but take the time to challenge those thoughts by writing down everything you’re good at and everything you love about yourself. Read the list aloud throughout the day (or whenever you need it) to keep yourself afloat.

5.  Avoid romantic movies and music
Steer clear of romantic movies and love songs. They will only make you feel worse. Instead, watch movies that make you laugh and listen to encouraging and upbeat music. Check out the playlist below for some perf breakup songs.
