I think I'm mean! Help!

I can be very mean sometimes. I’m not a mean popular girl who wants to make other people’s lives miserable. But I tend to say nasty things when I don’t really mean any of it.

Are there any tips on how I can be less mean to people?

Hey girl! Sounds like you’ve just gotten into a habit of saying mean things and not actually meaning them. So, it’s time to kick the habit for good so people don’t mistake you for actually being mean.

Get your friends in on it

Tell your pals about your plan. If they tell you that you aren’t mean, tell them you think you are and this is something you would like to change for yourself. Have them tell you when you say something mean. They have to stick with this so you can become aware of how often you say something not so nice.

Think before you speak

Believe me when I say this is a problem for a lot of teenagers (and um, some adults, too!). But instead of just blabbing the first thing that comes to mind, stop and think. Ask yourself if what you are about to say is going to hurt someone’s feelings or if it sounds meaner than you actually intend it to sound.

Breaking a bad habit

Just like biting your nails, this can disappear within a month if you work at it. It’s about being aware of what you say at all times and making sure your friends are helping you keep tabs on your comments. Once you start saying nice things, instead of mean things, the bad habit will be gone!

Xoxo,
Liz
