My parents wont let me grow up!

My mom and dad expect me to never like someone (until I'm married) and never be into fashion or anything like that. How's that possible? I'm a girl—these things just naturally come to me! I mean, I can't not like someone! I don't want to be secretive. And I don't want to be clueless in the ways of love either. What should I do?

Hey, girly! Sorry to hear about the way frustrating sitch. It’s tough when parents hold on a tad too tight, but you got to remember they’re just trying to do what’s best for you.

Walk a mile in their shoes

Before you talk to your ‘rents, take a sec to see things from their perspective. Being a parent is WAY hard! And to see your li’l girl growing up so fast (as cheesy as it sounds) can be even harder.  Getting older is a big transition for you and mom and pops. So as frustrated as you are, don’t forget that they’re just doing the best they can. They love you and only want what’s best for their darling daughter.

Now talk it out

The best thing for you to do is sit down for a chat with mom and dad.  Let them in on how you’re feeling, but let ‘em know you understand their side too. Stay calm, hear them out, and be respectful. This way, you’ll be able to not only tell them but also show them just how mature and responsible you are.

Compromise is key

If your parents are a bit hesitant to let go, try working out some sort of compromise that’ll balance both of your wants. If you wanna go on a date, maybe you can bring the lucky guy home to meet them first. Or maybe you can make it a group date. If you want new, trendier clothes, offer to buy them after you get their approval. I’m sure together you can all work something out. The trick is baby steps!

Good luck!
