The Real Deal on Acrylic Nails

I’m thinking of getting acrylic nails. Is that a good idea? Are they a lot of work?

It’s really up to you! Some girls like the look of longer tips, while others hate the hassle (fakes have a tendency to weaken your nails underneath). Here are all the deets you need to make your own informed decision about goin' fake.

Danger, Danger
There are medical risks: acrylic nails, if exposed to water, could cause fungal infections to grow on your actual nails. Also, the glue used to apply the nails could even damage your natural nail for good if they’re ripped off in the wrong way. Double ew! Choosing a good manicurist who practices safe techniques is key.

There are more cosmetic downsides, too. Namely, they just look fake. Plus, you need to make sure you’re ready to devote some serious time to these babies: ya gotta head to the salon every two weeks for maintenance sessions, which could definitely cost more $$$ than you were planning in the first place.

The Bright Side
The reason why salons use acrylic is because it can actually feel like real nails, since it’s light and won’t get in the way of your daily routine. The nails come in all sorts of designs and colors, too, so you can be sure your nails are perf for Y-O-U and any occasion. And if you’re a nail biter, a lot of chicas curb the habit by using fakes!

The Bottom Line
Basically, getting acrylic nails is a personal decision. Can you deal with the maintenance and moolah? Wanna take the risk? Are you sure you can’t grow your own nails and just get a normal manicure? Each girl should weigh the good and the bad beforehand. As for us, we don't think acrylic nails are worth the price, time or damage to your real nails.
