My Mom's Embarrassed to Talk

My body is really starting to change but my mom is afraid to talk. I'm too embarrassed to bring it up. What am I supposed to do?

Ugh. It figures. The one time you actually want your mom to speak up and give you advice she suddenly forgets how to talk. Puberty isn’t fun for anyone, but it’s nothing to feel embarrassed about—it happens to everybody. Luckily, you’re in the right place. GL has tons of great advice for your bod and girls just like you so you’ll never feel alone.

What’s going on?

You probably have a lot of questions about what’s happening to your body, as well you should. Puberty is a time when your body changes from a girl into a young woman. You’ll notice hair in places where it didn’t use to be, such as your underarms and private parts. And that’s totally normal. Your breasts will also begin to grow and eventually you’ll start your period, happens every 28 days or so. For more info, check out our Period Hub and Body Hub.

You’re not alone

Yes, it might feel like you’re the only one who has to wear a bra and shop for tampons. But you’re not. Other girls are going through the same thing. And if they’re not? Don’t worry—their time will come. If you don’t feel comfortable discussing what’s going on with your friends, maybe you can reach out to an older sister or cousin for some help. After all, they’ve been there and done that and are probably more than willing to help you out.

Mom & Mother Nature

Chances are your mom probably feels about as embarrassed as you do and she doesn’t know how to approach the topic. So it’s up to you to break the ice. You could wait for the next tampon/pad commercial to come on to pop the question so it doesn’t seem like it came out of nowhere. You could say, “Hey Mom, there’s something I really want to talk to you about, but I feel a little silly bringing it up.” Hopefully she catches your drift and asks you what’s on your mind so you can speak up. And we’re here for you, too!

Lots of love,
L’Oreal
