News Update: Abby Sunderland lost at sea
Hey girlies! We know you’re concerned about Abby Sunderland, the 16-year-old sailor featured in our J/J ’10 issue attempting to be the youngest sailor to circle the globe, and we are too!
We wanted to give you a quick update on what's going on: As of early Thursday morning, 16 year-old Abby lost contact with her family when she sailed into a storm in the Southern Indian Ocean. Abby is equipped with three emergency beacons on her boat, “Wild Eyes,” two of which were set off manually. The third beacon, which is not yet set off, is automatically activated by salt water if the boat capsizes and reaches a depth of 15 feet.
Abby’s family remains hopeful that she is safe, and has been working tirelessly with Australian Search & Rescue who, along with the Australian Coast Guard, is sending two boats and a helicopter to her aid.
