How can I make my parents trust me again?

I got arrested 4 months ago for shoplifting with my BFF. It was horrible! But I moved on--my parents didn't. They still don't let me go out! I have a life of my own and even though I did do something horrible, I accept that. It's not like I can go back and change it. I just want my parents to let it go, but how?

Hey girly, you’re one tough cookie. Not a lot of people can go through your situation and come out a better and stronger person because of it. But you have and that’s something to be proud about. Even if your parents aren’t so quick to forgive and forget, you can still earn their trust again. We’ll show you how.

Learn from the past

You made a mistake and hopefully you’ve learned from it. You know that shoplifting is wrong and you’ll never do it again. Try writing an apology letter to your parents. You could begin by telling them you’re sorry about what you did and even more sorry for disappointing them. A lot of times actions speak louder than words. Show your parents you learned your lesson by helping out more around the house and obeying your curfew.

Make a change

A great way to show you’re responsible is to do good deeds. This can range from babysitting your li’l sibs for free to tutoring younger students at the local library after school. Your parents will see that you can handle different situations and you’re mature. When you go back to school, make sure you complete your homework and papers on time. Your hard work will translate to good grades, which also means happy parents.

Patience is a virtue

You’ve probably already figured out your parents aren’t going to forgive you overnight, but they still love you no matter what. If you find that they’re still being difficult, ask to talk to them about what happened. Ask them what steps you can take to regain their trust and promise to make smarter decisions in the past. Remember, nobody’s perfect and everybody makes mistakes. It’s all a part of being human. What you learn from those mistakes and what you do afterward is really what counts.
