I want to talk to my 'rents about boys!

I can talk about everything almost everything with my parents: Fights with friends, clothing problems, eating healthy, etc. The one thing I have trouble talking about is boys and dating.

Every time they bring up a boy, it goes like this, "Any cute boys at the party?" Then I say, "No, they were all ugly." Even though my super cute crush was there. I'm 12 and going into seventh grade, but I've never been on a date. Is there a way to talk about dating openly and un-awkwardly with my parents? Thanks!

Hey girl,

You're def not alone. A lot, and I mean A LOT of girls feel exactly the way you do. And why wouldn't they? Crushing on a cutie is essentially top-rated secret info. It's totally understandable to feel awkward when you talk about it with the 'rents. So if you're looking to ease up on the awkwardness, here are some things to know:

Your parents totally went through the same thing. I mean in order to be an adult they had to go through that teenage stage where you crush and blush, right? And when you put that into perspective, it makes it obvious that your parents can understand how you feel. So whether you tell your parents about the latest crush or not, they'll know when to dig in with questions and when to step back.

Awkward sitches are only awk because you have the mentality that they are. That's right. If you tell yourself it isn't awkward to tell your parents that you saw your crush that a party, then it really won't be. So the next time, just say, "Yeah! I saw a cute boy at a party, but it's still DL."

Make it clear to your 'rents you're only comfortable sharing a certain amount about a cutie. For example, don't go into a conversation about boys without letting your mom know that today you won't be giving out specific names or that you don't want to go into the details. This way, you won't be caught off guard by your mom's questions.
