Pretty Pink Pictures for the Cause

Hey girls, do you have a hobby or dream that you want to turn into a reality? We had the pleasure of chatting with a 16-year-old sistah who is doing just that. Eryne Grant is from Eugene, Ore., and is combining her love for photography with a great cause.
Eryne is a portrait, freelance and concert photographer and in light of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month she’s adding that famous ribbon to her portraits, and turning her landscapes pink! Eryne is a courageous young woman who is trying to make a difference in the world, and we can all learn somethin’ from her driven nature.

GL: What sparked your interest in photography?

Eryne: I've been into photography as long as I can remember. I wasn't really into it until probably two years ago, when I realized how to take photos at different angles. I know a lot of people who are photographers, too, and it's becoming really popular for younger people to get into. I always try to differentiate myself in all of the photos I take, whether it's portrait photography or concert photography, and I think that's why I've been getting a positive response to my photos.

GL: Who taught you how to get started?

I wasn't told how to start; I got a small point-and-shoot camera and started taking photos with the resources I had. I eventually upgraded to the professional camera and lenses I'm using now. I haven't even been able to get into the photography class at my high school. The photos I shot at Warped Tour 2010 are my favorites, and I wasn't even in the photographer section to take them, I was with everyone else!

GL: How did you decide to combine your love for photography with a cause?

I knew it was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so I just decided to do something different and take photos to represent the month, and help put the word out there with my friends. I thought this was the least that I could do to promote breast cancer awareness.

GL: Does this issue touch close to home? Or are you just doing it because it’s such a good cause?

I don't know anyone who has/had breast cancer, but...I think everyone should get involved in any way they can, even if it's just by buying a Keep-A-Breast bracelet that many teenagers wear.

GL: Is there anything you would like to say to other GL readers to encourage them to follow their dreams just like you have?

I'd like to tell girls that you don't need the fancy camera supplies; you can use your camera phone, point-and-shoot camera or anything you have available to take awesome photos. Also, don't let others tell you your photos aren't good. It takes skill to get ANY type of good shot, whether it's of you or of something else.
