Lost

Here's a story written by a GL reader for our 13 Days of Halloween Ghost Story Contest. Let us know what you think and be sure to check each day for more ghastly tales!
Gabrielle is lost in darkness. She feels the darkness but sees nothing, waving her arms to find something, anything in the black night. Still, there is nothing.

She doesn't have a clue where she is, but her instincts tell her to run. So she does, she takes off straight ahead into the blackness. Suddenly there is a break in the emptiness. Her heart leaps from her chest and she is already running eagerly to the dim glow of light that breaks through the darkness.

Through a stretch of trees she can make out a figure hunched over a fire. As she approaches, the figure turns. Gabrielle lets out a scream at this face, so familiar. Thin eyebrows, thin lips, small nose, brown eyes. Dull brown hair, nothing special, except that this is the hair she has brushed thousands of times, the eyebrows she's plucked.

The face is her own.

Gabrielle shuts her eyes, squeezes them tight until the face is gone. A blood-curdling scream erupts out of her chest. Then, suddenly, she feels light and airy, like a feather, then nothing.

When she wakes up, she pats the ground around her, wondering why she is asleep on the ground. She could have sworn she had gone back upstairs after watching that scary movie. She looks up, expecting to see the glowing numbers on her TV set's cable box, but sees only blackness. What's going on? she cries in her head. Where am I?

As she swats at the empty darkness around her, she realizes that this land of darkness is real. This isn't a dream, and she isn't waking up. All alone in the dark forever. Or so she thinks, until she feels hands on her neck. Not alone, not alone, she thinks as she gazes upon her face etched on this hunched figure. The hands tighten, and she gasps for air.

Darkness. Only darkness.
