Migraines: What to do and how to deal

My doctor diagnosed me with migraines. I get them a lot and I can’t do much when I’m suffering from one—no reading, no computer. What can I do when I’m feeling not so great?

You’re so not alone, sweetie, although we’re sorry you’re hurtin’. Up to 10 percent of teens suffer from migraines, and according to Kidshealth.org, girls are three times more likely than boys to get them once they hit their teens.

It stinks that you probably have to miss school, sports and other extracurrics while you’re out with a migraine, but there’s gotta be something engaging you can do to pass the time.

To avoid migraines, you need to learn what your triggers are. Keeping a diary of your activities before, during and after an episode can be helpful, as is talking to a doctor. Things like caffeine, too much time spent on the computer, really loud music and certain foods can trigger a migraine. When you think something might be setting off your headaches, avoid it like the plague. Some things, however, like stress and menstruation, can’t be avoided.

So how can you deal? Some doctors will prescribe treatment plans or medications. If your doc does, follow his prescription to the letter. Taking medication when you feel a migraine coming on can prevent it from occurring or lessen the severity.

If your head is already pounding, try activities that relax your body: deep breathing, meditation and static yoga poses are all soothing and might help ya deal, depending on your other symptoms.

I also suggest listening to quiet music or audio books when the headache strikes. Try transforming a migraine into your time to discover new indie artists or “read” books you haven’t tackled yet.

And now for some good news: Many teens who suffer from migraines early in life outgrow them. Keep those fingers crossed!

Do you deal with migraines or lotsa sick days, babes? How do you cope?
