Turn your room into paradise

Have you ever noticed that when your bedroom is blah, you wake up feeling blah? Freshen up your bland boudoir with a dose of paradise. Here are our five favorite ways to create a space that is absolutely adore.

Create a haven

You know those princess-like canopy beds with the curtains? Yeah, those. Create your own by purchasing shears from a home goods store or yards of fabric from a craft store. Enlist your parents’ help to hang from the walls or ceiling. If you aren’t big on encircling your bed, consider hanging a set around a hang-out area, like a chair or window seat, or your desk.

Something you can sink into

Add a plush element to your space by tossing brightly colored throw pillows in luxe fabrics—silk, satin, velvet—on your bed. Stitch ‘em up yourself by buying “fat squares” or remainders of fabric from craft stores, or snap up a few from stores like Bed Bath and Beyond. Throwing yourself onto a bed packed with pillows? Ahh, now that’s the life.

Fluff it up

Grab a rug you can wiggle your toes in. Place it beside your bed, so you roll out in the a.m. onto squashy ground, or beneath your desk chair or by a squashy armchair. Look for faux sheepskin, shag or another fuzzy sort of nap or pile.

Scent-sational

Give your room a signature scent you absolutely adore. Perhaps it’s a candle, perhaps it’s a spritz of perfume or bowl of potpourri. Perhaps it’s a plant—just don’t forget to water! Choose a smell that relaxes you, makes you feel like your home. A scent that’s rich but not overpowering.

Investment piece

Everyone has one thing they’re crazy about. Maybe you’re a jewelry maven. Maybe you love music. Maybe you’re a soccer star. Whatever it is, find a unique piece that highlights your passion, and save up your babysitting bucks and allowance to snag it. Gorgeous jewelry box? Killer speakers? Blown up poster of you ‘n’ your teammates winning the championship? Go for it! Yeah, it might be expensive now, but if it’s something you really treasure, it’ll be worth—and it’ll be an item that makes you smile every time you see it.
