Exclusive: Karan Brar spills on his new show BUNK'D

We've chatted with sixteen-year-old Disney Channel star Karan Brar before, but now that his new show is premiering tonight, we knew we had to catch up with him again. Though Jessie's winding to an end, it turns out that once you're a Ross kid, you're always a Ross kid since Karan, Peyton List, and Skai Jackson are all reprising their roles in the newest Disney series, BUNK'D. When the Ross kids go away to Camp Kikiwaka in Maine—the very camp their parents met at—they've got to adjust from their ritzy NYC apartment to their more rustic cabin digs. But that's not the only adjustment they have to make. Check out our Q&A with Karan to see what he had to share.

GL: So what was it like for the Ross kids having to transition from their lives of luxury to living in the woods?

Karan: It’s pretty exciting! We have some crazy adventures, some wild stuff that happens at Camp Kikiwaka. The Ross parents, Christina and Morgan, were actually camp sweethearts there, and I think it’s they said, “Check out where we grew up at. Have some fun during the summer,” instead of letting the kids whole themselves up in a penthouse in Manhattan during the summer. I think it’s about trying to see how the Rosses would react in a different environment and see how they adjust. And we kind of go back in time a little bit, to show what Christina and Morgan went through when they met at camp. We’ve got amazing stories.

GL: Does Ravi adjust quickly to living away from home?

Karan: I think he’s definitely trying really hard to adjust to it, but he kind of wants to be back in the penthouse. He’s so adamant on being the best in school, and now he’s focused on being the best counselor he can be. I think it’s going to be cool seeing Ravi grow as a character and person, see what decisions he makes and how he reacts around different people. You know in Manhattan, you have all sorts of people, but at sleepaway camp on the first day of camp you meet all these people from different walks of life, the U.S, and potentially all over the world. So I think Ravi is going to meet some really interesting characters, and just grow as a person.

GL: What did you think when you heard that Disney and all the Jessie fans wanted to see more of the Ross kids and that you guys were getting your own show?

Karan: It was kind of overwhelming, the response, because Jessie is such an amazing storyline and it’s a blessing in reality. We were so lucky that the fans wanted to see more and we were so happy that the writers were able to write more about the Jessie characters, continuing it on.

GL: Do you think we'll get a chance to see Debby Ryan or Cameron Boyce reprise their roles?

Karan: Hopefully! That would be super cool. I think it would be like a nifty cross over if Jessie tracked Luke back wherever he’s gone off to and dragged him to see the whole lay of the land over at camp. Debby's working hard on The Never Ending and their music, and Cameron has Gamer's Guide, but if they can take a break from their busy schedules and come back that would be amazing.

GL: Will we get to see Ravi have any more crushes while at camp?

Karan: That would be super fun! I think it would be cool. I know Emma’s got a crush, which is going to be really exciting. I feel like we have so many different age groups, so it will be cool to see the different perspectives on it. When you like a girl in fourth grade, it’s very different from when you like a girl in high school. I think it would be a cool storyline we could add into that. Hopefully Ravi gets to find his camp sweetheart! It would be cool to see Zuri to have a love interest, too. She’s so tough, and I think it would be really cool to see someone she goes gaga over a little bit, and makes her happy. I think it would be cool to have a storyline like that, and have Emma and Ravi to help her out.

GL: One thing we love about Ravi is that he's not just an Indian character, he's a character from India who gets to have a completely different perspective. What's it like getting to bring a character like that to life?

Karan: I take a lot of pride in it. Being able to represent the Indian community in a way that I can truthfully spread our culture, and just being able to educate people about certain topics they aren’t even aware of is impressive, and it means a lot. I get to educate people about the traditions we have in the Indian community and I feel like it’s kind of a big responsibility, but it’s so much fun at the same time. Disney Channel tries really hard to expand cultural boundaries and make sure that every kid, when they watch the show, feels like they can relate to one character or all of them simultaneously, somehow at once.

Are you tuning in to watch BUNK'D tonight on Disney at 10 p.m.? What do you think will happen when the Ross kids go to camp?
