Ask Lucky: They Banned My BFF!

My BFF was grounded for stealing money from her parents. I’m not supposed to know, but her mom told my mom and my mom told me. My parents think I should remain friends with her but not invite her over anymore—they think she might steal something. I don’t know what to do. Should I talk to her about it?

Yikes. Since you’re not supposed to know about your friend’s transgression, I’d steer clear of talking about it. It’s probably something she’s not exactly proud of and would like to remain private. Since all teens make mistakes, I agree that you shouldn’t end the friendship.

But I would reconsider the issue of having her in your home. This is obviously a question you should debate with your parents, but unless her stealing is a pattern, it was likely a mistake she’s not bound to repeat. Suggest to your parents that you’ll always be around her when she comes over to hang out. If they’re adamantly against it, do things outside the house. Meet at the movies or take a kickboxing class together.
