Dealng With Divorce

My really good friend and I both think our parents might split up. We talk to each other about it in private, but I don't think we've said anything to anyone else.

It makes us feel better when we talk to each other but we're both still really worried about what might happen to our families. We start crying and are really afraid. I need advice for myself and to help her with her fam's problems, too.

Oh man, chicka. My parents got divorced when I was really little, so I totally feel exactly what you're going through. The entire situation, between fighting, moving and getting life back together again was scary, strange and hurtful. The good news here is that you aren't even positive that is going to happen yet. So, why don't we start at the beginning, OK?

I know it can be super hard, but you really need to talk to your parents about why you feel that they're headed for divorce. Sit down with your mom or dad and let them know that you feel this way. Ask them what is really going on.

They love you and you're a major part of your family, and you totally have a right to know everything! If the bad news does come out that your folks are calling it quits, ask them what will happen next. Give them your input about what you'd like, but keep in mind their feelings, too. Even though splitting up can be full of hard times, it can also be a really good thing. After all, who wants to see their parents upset every day? Plus, tons of families go through the entire process and everyone remains friends!

As for your friend, just be there for each other. Vent, cry and talk things out and don't be afraid to seek help from a guidance counselor (you can go together if it makes you feel better!). And try to distract yourself – throw a fun sleepover, get out of the house for a run or just window shop at the mall...anything to get your mind off the tension at home.

So, don't loose hope yet, babes. Take it one step at a time and you'll all be okay.
