Hips Ahoy!

One day you’re throwing on your favorite shorts and stepping out; weeks later, you look like you have a little extra cargo in your pockets. Say hello to hips, one more set of curves to adjust to.

Right around the same time you fill out on top, you’ll probably also get a little extra on the sides. Again, every girl’s body develops at its own pace. Still, it’s surprising when you first notice them. “I used to buy clothes in the children’s department,” says one reader, “but then I got hips, and suddenly, I have to move to juniors.” Other girls find styles they were used to now look different: “My straight skirts look odd because of my hips.”

One reader who hated her new hips woke up one day and realized she likes the way they look: “Jeans look better on me with curves. I just had to get used to them.” You too will get used to them, and once you do, you will probably discover that, hey, having curves is cool.

What strikes girls as not so cool are stretch marks that come with insta-curves. Stretch marchs are purplish lines that pop up where skin has stretched to conform to you new shape. While they tend to turn up most on hips, you may see them on your breasts or stomach.

While you may feel a bit Frankenstein, almost all women have stretch mores. Over time, the lines become skim-colored and barely noticeable. To speed the fading process, rub on almond oil, vitamin E oil or cocoa butter.
