Not really lovin' my look

I am very self-conscious about how I look. I am really pale with glasses, braces and super-wavy hair. Whenever I look at pictures of myself I think, "I look so weird!"

All of my friends totally rock their look, but I never seem to be able to. Is there any way I can be less self-conscious?

Hey girlie,
I know how difficult it is to feel more self-conscious during this stage. Adolescence is sooo difficult because your body is undergoing so many changes. Through middle school and early HS years I always felt way awkward. It seemed like my body just had a mind of it's own! Trust me, everyone goes through that awk stage at some point, but they then blossom into a beautiful butterfly. The key is to learn to embrace the changes by being comfortable in your own skin.

Let's give your confidence a boost by spicing up your look. In middle school, I used to have super frizzy hair and glasses, also. The first thing I did when I was 12 was I got a straightener for my hair and my first pair of contacts. If wearing glasses bothers you, ask you mom to set up an appointment with the eye doc so you can trade those glasses in for 'tacts. And as for the straightener, any brand will do. From Hot Tools to Chi, find the one you like, and watch as it transforms your hair from wavy to wonderful!

Also, you can rock your look with a little make up and some new clothes! When it comes to make up, don't cake it on, girl. Natural is beautiful! Ask your mom to go shopping with you. It will be a special treat for you, and will make her feel great cause she gets to kick it with you! At the mall you can go to the make-up counter, and see if they can show you how to apply a natural look. Also, try Forever 21, American Eagle, Urban Outfitters, and H&M for cute and affordable clothes.

Next, its not just about your look. You have to be confident to be less self-conscious. Start by writing positive affirmations on your mirror. "You are strong." "You are beautiful." "You are golden." All of these will do. Whenever you look in the mirror you will see these super motivating sayings, and be reminded of just how great YOU are. However, don't just see it, believe it girl!

When it comes to our bodies, we all have the tendency to be our own worst critic. However, its necessary to love yourself, not matter WHAT you look like. These awkward stages are not permanent. Those braces will come off, and those pearly whites will shine through. As long as you are confident with yourself, people will notice your beauty instead of your flaws. Go get em' girlie!
