WE TRIED IT: Speedminton

Ever wish your fave sport was more portable? For me, it was badminton.

The exciting sport had me speeding across the court in gym class as I tried to hit the birdie; but unfortunately it didn’t exactly travel well. Keeping the birdie in reach on the beach? Not likely with the unpredictable breeze! So when my friend and I got a chance to try Speedminton, a portable version of my fave high school sport, we jumped at the opportunity.

Speedminton has no net to set up, birdies that glow in the dark (night match? No prob!), and additional weights you can add to the birdies on those windier days. It’s def a game any tennis (or racket-sport lovin’) fan would enjoy.

My BFF (and fellow GL intern Miliana) and I grabbed our rackets, prepped the birdie and went for the serve. Unfortunately, it didn’t end up quite where we envisioned it. Speedminton is fast—don’t get us wrong—but we found the birdie went a lot further than it does in badminton. As with any sport, there’s def a learning curve, so when you get started with your friends, don’t expect to be a pro at the first serve.

Each set comes with two rackets, three birdies (referred to as Speeders here), eight cones (to create your own make-shift net), a wind ring and a instruction booklet with fun ideas. Need a game to haul on your next vacay? Pack your speeders and racket—Speedminton doesn’t let anything get in the way.
