Summertime Period Tips

There you are…out by the water enjoying your summer vacation to the max when Eek! your dreaded period pops by for its monthly visit!

Between bloating, tampons, pads, cramps and moodiness, lounging by the pool is probably the last thing you want to worry about during that time of month. That’s why GL’s put together a guide to help you deal with your period and STILL having the best summer ever!

BE PREPARED
Always carry an emergency tampon or pad in your beach bag so “Aunt Flo” doesn’t catch you off guard. If you get cramps or back pains when your period shows up, also carry a little Ziploc baggie of Midol or aspirin to ease the pain!

LIVE THE PERIOD-CONSCIOUS LIFESTYLE
Live a healthy lifestyle all month long and you’ll for sure make your week surfin’ the crimson wave a piece o’ cake!

Cramps? Nix salty foods from your diet. Instead eat loads calcium-rich eats and lots and lots of water. Gettin’ plenty o’ rest and exercise* also helps too!

*Swimming is the best on-your-period exercise: the water is cool and soothing, and swimming is the least strenuous of all exercises.

A perfect summer cure? Stay away from caffeine so you don’t experience excessive bloating.

LISTEN TO YOUR BOD
On the week of your period, pay attention to what your body is telling you. If you feel like your period is too heavy, cut back on exercise. If you’re super bloated (the bikini’s biggest enemy), cut back on dairy products. Even if you’re super tired, avoid caffeine and eat fresh fruits (raisins are best) or spinach to keep you energy levels up.

Most importantly, go out and have a great summer! Don’t let your period get you down when the temperatures go up: if you’re prepared, you’re period week will come and go without a hitch!
