Ask Lucky: Lyin' Lady

One of my friends lies a lot. She even stole some of my things and lied about it. Should I stop being friends with her?

I just don’t want to be mean, but I also don’t want to be too nice.

Even if your friend doesn’t mean any harm by her lies, you should in no way ignore the issue, especially since she is also stealing. Her habit of lying and lifting stuff spells trouble. You shouldn’t have to deal with a friend you can’t trust. If you like her and want to salvage the friendship, arrange a time to sit down alone with her for a talk.

You don’t have to be mean or nice when you confront her—just be honest. Tell her you’re concerned about her actions because the friendship means a lot to you. But let her know you can’t stand by a friend who lies and steals. Lay down the law: If she doesn’t change her ways, you cannot remain friends with her. If she agrees to rein in her sticky fingers and loose tongue, give her another shot. Otherwise, it’s time to end this friendship.
