Just not a gym girlie!

I've always hated gym class since I was little. I'm not into any sports either. The only part I liked about gym last year was working on the equipment!
That's probably because working on the equipment isn’t competitive, it's solo.

I hate competitive things, and I stink at all sports, so everyone laughs when I try. I even got a bad grade because I wasn't
"trying my hardest" even though I was! This year we have a different
teacher, so can I get off to a fresh start? Thanks!

Hey, Juliana!

I totally know how you feel—gym was never my thing, either. I am a dancer and, unless you join a competition team or something, it’s pretty individualized, too. Being super competitive just isn’t our style!

It’s not always obvious, but gym class requires a ton of self-confidence from each student. Whenever I was embarrassed about something (not being able to hit the volleyball in a serve, for example), I would laugh at myself. Do the same to convince yourself that you’re having fun instead of dreading the court. Plus, when you actually do hit the volleyball (finally!), it’ll look like you meant to do that all along. You and your friends, both, will feel more relaxed in a fun rather than pressured-filled environment—and you’ll probably improve your sports skills when you relax, too! Be confident in the skills that you have mastered and that you are improving in.

It sounds like a new gym teacher is the perfect opportunity for you to get a fresh start in gym class. Set some attainable goals to work on while you’re in class. And fill your teacher in—maybe once every other week or so—on how you’ve improved, or on what goals you’ve met for yourself. Your teacher will definitely be able to tell that you’re trying your hardest—and succeeding!

Go get ‘em, girlie!

Good luck!
