SO against dissection

I'm 13 and in seventh grade. I'm also a vegetarian, and a rather strict one at that. I found out from my older brother that this year in my science class we're required to dissect three things: a worm, a frog and a starfish. Obviously, I'm not going to do it. It's 100% against what I believe in (though my beliefs are neither religious nor shared by my family).

Unfortunately, it's mandatory, and very important for the grade I get. Although I still have a while to go, I want to plan ahead. I don't want to fail science, but I really don't wanna go through with it. It will eat at my conscious forever. Please help!

Thanks,

Hey girl, first I have to say, “Wow!” I’m impressed with your determination to stand up for what you believe in. A lot of people are content to just go with the flow, but you’re committed to making a difference. I respect you for that.

It’s important for your teachers to understand why you’re against dissecting. You gotta let them know that you’re not just trying to get out of your schoolwork. Chances are, if your teachers understand where you're coming from, they'll be impressed by your maturity and more willing to compromise.

Thanks to modern technology, some schools allow students to dissect animals using a computer program. It’s easy and painless—a plus for you AND Kermit. Studies have shown you learn just as much about an animal from computer simulation as you do when you physically dissect.

If a virtual program isn't an option, ask your teacher if it would be possible to write an essay or work on a project instead. If you stand up for yourself and your beliefs, that will get you a long way—not only in school, but in life, too. I'm already proud that you're sticking by your beliefs. Best of luck, hon!

Lots of love,
L’Oreal
