Mom won't let me dye my hair!

My mom is driving me crazy because I'm 14 and she won't let me dye my hair. I've wanted to dye it ever since I was 12, but she always keeps saying, "Girls your age should not be dyeing their hair. You don't have to understand it."

She says it's tacky, but she doesn't even know how it'll even look on me! It's not like I want bright pink, just a darker brown.

I know girls that have dyed their hair as early as third grade, and I'm going to high school next year. Highlighting isn't even an option. How can I deal with her?

-Dying to Dye

Hey girl!

I can understand why you’re so frustrated with your mom! But the good news is that there are easy ways to talk to your mom about dyeing your hair without getting into an all-out argument.

You go girl!

First off, props to you for having the confidence to try something new. Not every girl can do that!

I bet your mom thinks you're awesome too—she just doesn’t want you to be unhappy with a decision that you can’t take back right away. It’s a lot easier to remove your nail polish than it is to remove a new hair color you might not like!

Write it up

A great way to communicate with mamacita is to write her a note explaining your point of view showing that you understand her concerns. Bonus about this? You don't have to argue or even hash it out face-to-face.

In your note, make two columns: one for reasons why you should be allowed to dye your hair and one for reasons why you shouldn’t. (psst! Remember what your said mom before!) Then, explain in a few sentences why you’d like to dye your hair and why you think you deserve the new look.

Everyone can win

After she reads your note, ask her if there is a “middle-ground” (ah, the beauty of a compromise!) you can agree on--like having her choose your new hair color, or waiting until your birthday and getting a new set of highlights for a really awesome present!

I can tell that you’re a cool, smart girl. Show your mom that you’ve done your research and I have a good feeling you’ll be able to reach a compromise that you BOTH like!
