Moving schools..because of a sport!

How stupid is it to move schools because of a sport? It all began with me making the basketball team last year. I started last year but this year I didn’t, even though I should have. Now, my parents are talking about moving to a different school because of it.

I mean I love to play basketball but I am not sure if I want to leave all my friends. I know a lot of people at the school I might move to, so it isn’t as bad but it’s still going to be hard. I don’t know what to do! Please, help!

Hey girl, there are a lot of reasons people switch schools and sports is NOT a dumb one. The fact is, playing basketball in high school can lead to big scholarships in college. Dream of playing in the WNBA? Looking to play ball in college? What you do in high school and middle school then is real important, champ. Not really lovin' the game? Then switching up schools isn’t as crucial of a choice.

Bounce the pros and cons around

As with any big decision, girl, it’s way important to think about what positives and negatives come with switching schools. You’ve got friends at both schools so that’s a positive both ways around. But is the faculty way better at School A versus School B? Does School B have other strong departments you’re interested in (theatre, science, etc.)? Then it’s worth really thinking about. Make a pro/con list and discuss it with your ‘rents. It’s super-important you give both sides equal weight before you make the final call.

Don't let your dreams dribble

If being on the basketball team is way important to you and your future, you shouldn’t hesitate to go to the other school. I know someone who switched schools to get on a more recognized basketball team—he’s looking to play in Division 1 in college (a major deal!). If you’re serious about sports, it’s OK and necessary to sacrifice.

Is the ball in your court?

That said, you shouldn't change locales if your head’s not in the game! If your heart is sending you different places, listen to it. This is your future, girl, and this is 100% your decision. Talk to your ‘rent’s if you’re not feeling it. Explain to mom, pops, coach, whoever, that while you think basketball is fun, you’re interested in other things, too. Get involved with some other activities. You can always pick basketball up off-season too—look into community teams. Less commitment, but still tons of fun.

In the end, superstar, this is your choice: not your parent’s or friend’s. While it may seem hard, you need to weigh your options carefully and really think ahead. Changing schools is a big deal, but sports is a good reason if that’s where you see yourself heading. I know it may seem hard with a lot of different people pulling you different directions, but listen to your heart in all of this. I promise if you do, you will make the right choice for you. Good luck!

Infinite xoxo’s,
Alyssa B.
