How much discharge is too much?

Every day I have to wear a thin pad because I have so much discharge.

Is there something wrong with my body since I'm having so much of it? Should I see a doctor?

Hey girl,

When you start noticing discharge in your underwear, it’s a sign that your body is happy, healthy and doing all the right things as it develops. Your question is perfectly normal, and I’m proud that you're seeking information to keep your body on track!

Discharge differences

Girls start to get discharge around the time they're teens and have it for the rest of their lives. It depends on the time of the month and how old you are, but discharge always changes. It can be light or heavy, thick or runny, yellow, white, or clear!

Wearing thin pads when you start to see discharge is a great idea, no matter how light or heavy it is. By wearing a li'l pad every day, you’ll never stress when heading to the girls bathroom. Plus, you can easily throw away and replace them throughout the day as needed.

Is it normal?

It’s hard to say how much discharge is too much, because that’s up to your doc to decide. Ask your parents to arrange an appointment so you can talk about what you’re experiencing now and changes to look for in the future. If your discharge is discolored—a.k.a. not clear or whitish like it should be—that may be 'cause for concern.

Also, if you notice a fishy or foul odor you might wanna hit up the doc's office, ASAP. Don't fret about it though. This is probably a sign of a simple yeast infection that can be cured really quick with something your doc prescribes. Either way, seeing a pro will put your mind at ease PLUS you’ll learn a ton of new information.

Keep asking!

No question about your body is ever a dumb question. You’re so smart to notice these changes and to make the right decisions to put your body (and mind!) at ease. Having a one-on-one appointment with your doc will help you to better recognize when something DOES seem amiss and to maintain a happy, healthy bod (just like the one you have now!)

XO,
Sammy
