Getting in trouble for talking

The kid I sit next to in school always is talking, but he NEVER gets in trouble for it. I don't talk that much in school, but when I do, I get this big lecture on how I talk way too much in class. When I try to convince the teacher that it really is the other boy and I don't talk that much, she doesn't believe me. What do I do?

Hey girl!

Ugh, that is so annoying. I have totally been in that place before and it can be SO frustrating! The good news is that there is definitely a way to show your teacher that you’re a good student who wants to learn and concentrate in class.

Chatter bug

Even though he’s not getting in trouble for it, it sounds like your deskmate may be a bad influence when it comes to you chatting more than usual in class. Next time he speaks to you while the teacher is talking, put your fingers over your lips to make the “quiet” signal. If he asks what’s up, tell him after class that you’re worried about getting lectured again. He’ll understand once you explain your reasons.

Teacher’s trust

While it’s not fair that the real chatty Charlie isn’t being lectured, it’s not UNfair that you’re being called out by the teacher for your chit chat, either. So how do you avoid another lecture? Make it a goal to not talk in class for an entire day. If you can do it (and I know you can!) try to do it again the next day, and then the next day after that. I'm sure Teach will notice, and you'll be on your way to fixing this prob.

Be an awesome (and silent!) student

It’s so much easier to do well in school when you can focus—and that makes it more fun, too, because you’re getting good grades and feeling confident! Sometimes it’s hard to stay silent and pay attention (especially on days when you’re not feeling well, or because there’s a new cutie in class!). Focusing during school hours will help you complete your homework faster, too—which makes more time for fun after that last bell rings! So stay quiet and listen up. It'll pay off...promise!
