Want ocean-inspired beach waves? Try this DIY sea salt spray

Sea salt is a key ingredient in many of the best hair texturizing sprays on the market — including some of my favorites, like Herbivore Sea Mist and Bumble and bumble Surf Spray. The sea salt helps replicate the effect that you’d get from a day at the beach: When your hair is exposed to salt water and salt air, it’s infused with texture and volume — super helpful for prepping hair before styling or just adding overall body.

As a beauty editor, I’ve tested hundreds, but my absolute favorite was the one I DIY’d myself for just a few dollars. Here's how to make it for yourself:

MATERIALS
1 glass spray bottle
2 tsp of sea salt (or, for something slightly less drying, substitute Epsom salt)
A few drops of essential oil (try lavender or eucalyptus)
A dollop of your favorite conditioner
1 cup (give or take) of warm water.

Like all the best recipes, it’s not a science. You can add a little bit more or a little bit less of anything to play with formula (more oil for stronger scent; more salt for a stronger spray).

DIRECTIONS
1. Combine all materials in your spray bottle. Cap it and shake everything together for a few minutes until salt the and conditioner are fully dissolved.

2. After the mixture has cooled, spray on wet or damp hair and then air dry (for natural waves) or blow dry (for a style with volume and texture). Depending on your recipe, the spray should last for about two months.
