This is a sign to start crocheting your clothes

If you're anything like us, you're *always* on the hunt for a new outfit. While we can pretty much guarantee that a cute look makes us 10x happier, constantly finding brand-new clothes can be time-consuming and expensive. Even at the thrift store, it can be difficult to snag the adorable cardigan you wanted to go with your high-rise blue jeans. So, what's a girl to do?

Start making her own clothes, that's what!

Unless you live on the opposite side of TikTok, you've probs seen people crocheting adorb fits all the time. Whether you're making a multicolored scarf or a pastel crop top, crocheting has been hailed as a sustainable, creativity-sparking way to enhance your wardrobe.

Want to get started yourself? Grab some yarn and a crochet hook—we'll handle the rest.

What is crochet?

@crocheting

Contrary to popular belief—crocheting isn't your grandma's favorite hobby (I mean, maybe it is, but you must have one cool grandma!). A distant cousin of knitting, the art of crochet is defined by the use of a single crochet hook to interlock strands of yarn. Crochet is typically a faster and simpler process than knitting—and creates way trendier pieces, in our humble opinion. We've caught Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus and other celebs sporting crochet pieces. It's about time you hopped on the bandwagon.

What are the benefits to crocheting my clothes?

@knitsngiggs

In addition to making unique clothes (just look at this sweater—need we say more?), crocheting can help reduce your stress. Since you'll be doing a lot of repetitive motions, you'll get into a headspace that's similar to meditation. Plus, crocheting could give you a boost of dopamine, and it's a way healthier alternative than scrolling through social media.

Crocheting is also a great way to do your part to help the planet. We all know fast fashion is a huge problem today, and making your own clothes is the perfect way to combat unnecessary waste.

How do I start?

All you need to start crocheting is some yarn in your color of choice (we love Girls' Life hot pink, obvi!) and a crochet hook. As you get better, you can incorporate multiple yarn colors into your creations.

From there, you'll need some practice. There are plenty of blog posts and YouTube videos online to help you learn, but it's important to start small. Make sure you master the basics before you start building your own wardrobe. We recommend blogger Sarah Maker's thorough how-to blog post, which will fill you in on all the skills you need.

If you're looking for a little more guidance, YouTuber and crochet queen Bella Coco has a fantastic series on crocheting for "absolute beginners." Check out the first video below.

What can I make?

@crochetbyjane

Really, what *can't* you make through crocheting? From tops to dresses to scarves to skirts, the possibilities are truly endless. We recommend starting with simpler designs like the single crochet pattern, but once you get the hang of it, you can create pretty much anything.
