Winter skin tricks from the pros

We chatted up the pros at Budhi Skincare and got the deets on how to keep your complexion and strands looking their best, even during icky winter months. They share their tried ‘n’ true advice about the best shampoo to use, how to tell if a product is mucking up your perf skin (finally!) and why even girls with oily skin should be moisturizing this winter.

Secrets to avoiding breakouts.
We love lip balms, but sometimes they can make your skin around your pout freak out. “Keep lips hydrated by applying a thin layer of lip balm,” say Charlene Short and Monique Richards of Budhi Skincare. “Avoid heavy and pigmented lip glosses or balms, as they can clog pores around the mouth.”

Moisturize, even if your skin is normally oily.
It’s sounds counterintuitive, but hear them out. “Even oily skin needs a moisturizing boost during the winter months from exposure to dry cold air and indoor heating,” they tell us. “Our Daily Shine Control Moisturizer is a light non greasy daily facial moisturizer loaded with super start antioxidants vitamins A & E to help promote healthy skin function." We like Daily Shine Control Moisturizer for Face, $26, budhiskincare.com.

Beware of your hair products.
Yep, the stuff you put on your strands to make it look amazing can have an impact on your whole bod. “The hair care products you use on your head can irritate the skin on your face , scalp, and body,” Charlene and Monique say. “We would recommend any shampoo free of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate and synthetic fragrance. Big bonus: If you color your hair we have found that sulfate free shampoos can prolong your color as they don't strip color from hair like shampoos formulated with sulfates.”

Find out what those lotions and potions do to your skin.
You might be using a cleanser that’s too harsh or a moisturizer that just isn’t right for y-o-u. “Look for any signs of redness, itching, excessive dryness, and or worsening acne flare ups,” Charlene and Monique confess. “These are all indications of irritation. Try waiting 15 minutes after you wash before applying medications and or applying the medications every other day. Everyone's skin reacts differently to products so you will need to experiment around to find what works for you.”
