Your official winter formal lookbook

High school winter formals are just around the corner! The night itself is *such* a vibe—dancing with friends and taking way too many pics—but the weeks leading up to the event of the season are v. stressful. Who do I bring? How should I style my hair? Most importantly: What do I wear? The options can seem overwhelming, but we've compiled all the styles of the season to help you decide what to wear on your special night.

Say yes to these dresses

Opt for darker, cooler tones and avoid light and bright dresses (which are more fitting for spring dances and proms). For dress style, decide if you want a mini, midi or maxi dress. FYI, dress length usually depends on the vibe (and requirements) of your school, so ask around to see what styles other people are planning to wear.

@lulus

Most people wear solid colors to school dances—it's elegant, timeless and gives you the freedom to accessorize. But what about patterns? We also say yes! Opt for a delicate and subtle floral print or a sparkly, eye-catching design (rather than polka dots or stripes). Winter formal is *the* time to wear that long sleeve dress you've been eyeing up—it's chic and keeps you warm. Additionally, stick to "S" necklines: square, sweetheart, spaghetti strap and off-the-shoulder.

You can't go wrong with a rockin' pair of heels. We're obsessed with strappy platforms and block heels. A black mini dress with strappy gold heels and gold jewelry? Yes, pls!

@sheinoffical

The height of the heels is totally up to you. We recommend 1-4 inches for a stylish and practical look. No one wants to suffer in their heels for hours, so bring an extra pair of shoes (like flats or sneakers) to dance the night away. A clean pair of Nike Air Force 1s or slip-on Vans will do.

Our go-to hairdos

Braided updos, gorg high buns, cute low buns, curled hair and straightened hair—your options might seem endless. Determine if you'd like to experiment with a new style or stick with the basics. We recommend practicing before the big day or calling your (honorary or real) big sis to try out a few styles a week or so before.

For the gals with long hair, try a half-up, half-down look, a stellar ponytail or a low bun. For the girlies with short hair, try a straight bob or a half-up, half-down look with a braid or twist. If you wear your hair up all the time, style it down. This is the night to switch things up a bit.

The makeup breakdown

We're here for a natural look with a pop of glitter. Start with a quality primer to ensure your makeup stays intact on the dance floor. Apply highlighter to your high points, dabbing the corner of your eyes and the tip of your nose. Fill out your eyebrows and apply a nude colored lipstick for a natural, yet refined, look. Thin black eye-liner, long lashes and a glittery smoky eye goes with any outfit. Pack extra concealer, setting powder and a small brush for touch-ups when you're off the dance floor.

Accessories to match

@the.lions.den

Match your jewelry to your shoes to help tie your fit together. We're currently loving minimalist jewelry: Thin gold or silver chains (with a few rings) are a must. Whether your hair is up or down, opt for diamond studs or oversized hoops. Add a small bag or clutch to carry your makeup essentials, gum and wallet.
