Must List

"My Future" from Billie Eilish offers an optimistic perspective

During an unusually crazy summer, most new music has been full of nostalgia for the time before we were all staying inside and wearing masks to the grocery store. However, in her new single, Billie Eilish looks to the future with optimism and hopefulness.

Eilish's latest single has a definite Y2K influence. The jazz-infused ballad of the first half reminds you of Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" with its slow beat and enchanting harmonies. The echoing effects on the first half give the song a haunting quality that has come to be typical for Billie's sound. When the beat picks up in the second half, it feels like something entirely new. Unexpected and original, the second half of the song makes you want to perform in front of the mirror.

The best part of "My Future" is the lyrics, which Eilish co-wrote with her brother and long-time collaborator FINNEAS. Eilish's latest song is all about embracing all of the possibilities out there, even if they're scary. Eilish sings, "I'm in love, but not with anybody else, just want to get to know myself", encouraging her listeners to use this time of solitude to get better acquainted with themselves. While the world feels like a chaotic and frightening place, "My Future" reminds us that the future is ours for the taking.
