GL hangs with Shake It Up's Kenton Duty

What’s it like to spend an afternoon with Kenton Duty? Imagine laughing nonstop for hours.

I was lucky enough to hit up the driving range (Kenton’s favorite activity) with the 16-year-old Disney Channel star at NYC’s The Golf Club at Chelsea Piers and discovered a few things about the cutie who plays foreign exchange student/backup dancer Gunther Hessenheffer on Shake It Up: 1. He not only has a powerful swing, but an intense knowledge of the sport he’s been doing with his fam since he was a tot. 2. He can put a positive spin on anything (even my lack of golf talent!) 3. <Listen up, ladies!> He thinks girls, “rule the universe.”

Between swapping turns with the clubs and dodging this funnyman’s mini pranks, I asked Kenton to dish about his fabulous character and the new season of Shake It Up, which kicks off this Sunday, Sept. 18, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

GL: So tell me, what’s your favorite thing about Gunther?

Kenton: His confidence. He feels that typical pressure of being a teen, but when he’s performing, nothing can stand in his way.

He’s a foreign exchange student. If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?

Japan. I love the culture there…and sushi. I’ve never been but fingers crossed I’ll go soon.

If you were to make up a dance routine to any song right now, which would you pick?
I think it would be cool to do a hip-hop remix to “Step In Time” from Mary Poppins.

What’s your favorite Shake It Up move right now?

It’s sort of this funky version of a cat daddy. You go into it and just let your groove fill you up.

What can we expect to see in the new season of Shake It Up?

Some amazing dances—one will blow your mind. Also, Gunther is growing up. You’re seeing him start to understand that he’s good looking. He’s dated CeCe, he’s dated the head cheerleader at school, so he’s obviously got the charm to go with it but it’s definitely much of a “he’s finding himself” storyline.

If you could shake things up with Gunther, what would you want him to do?

I’d like him to break dance a lot more. I recently learned how to b-boy so I’m trying to implement that into the dancing.
