Back to School with Keke Palmer

School’s back in session and we know you’re super excited to hit the halls—and books! GL sat down with 15-year-old teen star, Keke Palmer, for our upcoming issue, and she gave us a little glimpse at what school’s like for her, plus tips on how to snag that confidence during your first few weeks. Check it out!

And don’t forget to see Keke on the big screen in her new movie The Longshots in theaters now!

School Days

“I’m in an independent study program. Basically, what I do is I turn in my work two days out of the week. I go to school Tuesdays and Thursdays, so all of those days in between I work and do the school work that they give me. And then I turn it in to my teacher and they make me take a test to make sure that no one did my schoolwork for me. After that, I’m done with that subject. It’s pretty difficult just because I have to learn everything independently. When I’m on the set I have a teacher that helps me and I love that she’s there just because I feel more like I’m at school.”

Public vs. Private

“I went to [both] public school and private school. Private school has always been much more strict, but at the same time it had so many fun things, like “70s Day.” [To me] it was much more fun because there were different activities. And with public schools these days, they wear uniforms, too, so it’s not like they’re any different because of that. But with private school they had days where it was like “you would wear what you want day” and at [the] public school [I went to] they [didn’t].”

Put Your Most Confident Foot Forward

“I’m very outgoing and talkative. I love meeting new people. I’m not quiet or shy or any of the things that I’m portrayed in my movies. You just have to think about what’s the worst that could happen. You’re not going to die if you go out there or make a change, or do this one play, or talk and be funny. What’s the worst that can happen? The worst is someone will laugh at you. The worst is someone might make fun of you. That’s the worst that can happen. You have to think ‘is it really that bad?’”
