Grounded? Hand over the cell

Moms and dads everywhere are a getting a li’l more tech-savvy, especially when it comes to punishing their teens. The Washington Post reports that the typical teen punishment of being grounded from going out with friends has been updated for the 21st century, with parents taking away cell phones or texting, video games, laptops and Facebook privileges, just to name a few.

According to a survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, 62% of teens are getting their cell phones taken away as opposed to being grounded from going out.

The kicker? Parents say that the new trend in punishment is less harsh than what they suffered in their teenage years, but today’s teens beg to differ. Some protest that being without a cell phone is dangerous, that laptops are necessary to do homework, and Internet rights are needed to contact a study partner or teacher through the class’ group page on Facebook.

Have you been a victim of tech-grounding? Would you rather be grounded at home than lose Facebook or texting privileges? Sound off, girlies!
