BREAKING: Taylor Swift endorses Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential race
Last night Taylor Swift endorsed Kamala Harris's campaign for President of the United States.
Her announcement came just minutes after the end of the first debate between former President Trump and Vice President Harris, in the form of an IG post to her over 238 million followers.
It's no surprise that the post quickly went viral, since a statement of support from one of the world's biggest celebs can make a major impact (The post currently sits at nearly 9 million likes—it garnered 1M within the first 30 minutes).
Political experts suggest that Taylor's words could potentially boost voter turnout, inspiring many more young people (& Swifties!) who are eligible to hit the polls come November.
Taylor cited a few different policy issues she's particularly invested in: women's reproductive rights, support for the LGBTQ+ community and IVF (that's in vitro fertilization, a procedure that helps women get pregnant).
Aside from backing the Harris-Walz campaign, Taylor also encouraged everyone—no matter their party preferences—to register to vote, research each candidate's proposed plans and be wary of any misinformation that might be circulating online. (To this last point, she specifically calls out fabricated AI-generated images that suggested she supported Trump, which she says motivated her to "be very transparent about [her] actual plans for this election as a voter").
In typical Tay fashion, she infuses her statement with a little humor, too, signing it "Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady" (a reference to a comment made in 2021 by Trump's running mate, Senator J.D. Vance). And who better to feature front and center than Benjamin Button, one of Tay's beloved feline friends?
