Must List

Melanie Martinez makes her music mark with The Dollhouse EP

When it comes to reality-singing competition shows like American Idol and The Voice, contestants don’t always have to take the top spot in order to make it big. Case in point: Jennifer Hudson and Kellie Pickler. Now, Melanie Martinez is the next former contestant to kick her career into high gear.

The 19-year-old singer was a contestant on season 3 of The Voice in 2012. Fast forward two years and Melanie is forging her own musical path with an upcoming EP release. Here, GL breaks down her debut The Dollhouse EP (releasing this Tuesday, May 20) song by song.

“Dollhouse”

The title track is also Melanie’s debut single. Here, she really wants to hit home the fact that things aren’t always as perfect as they may seem on the surface. Lyrics like, “Everyone thinks that we’re perfect,” totally get that point across. The music may be dark and eerie, but that makes the song all the more enticing.

“Dead to Me”

The ominous vibe from “Dollhouse” continues as Melanie sings about letting go of someone who has done her wrong on this track. She’s incredibly unapologetic about it, too. We have to admit, some of the lyrics Melanie spouts are very serious, but we love her completely fearless attitude nonetheless.

“Carousel”

Melanie brings a carnival-esque vibe into the mix with this tune. Love is the subject at hand again but this time she sings about it in a more conventional way. The lyrics, “Chasing after you is like a fairy tale, but I feel like I’m glued to this carousel,” explain Melanie’s serious struggle to catch a crush that’s just out of her grasp. Yeah, we can definitely relate to that…

"Bittersweet Tragedy”

Melanie really shows off her pipes in this song. We didn’t think it was possible, but there’s much more drama and emotion here than on the rest of the EP. The music definitely has a Lana Del Rey vibe while the lyrics seem to tell the story of a love gone wrong.

Don’t forget to pick up Melanie Martinez’s debut, The Dollhouse EP, when it’s released on Tuesday, May 20. To see if Melanie is stopping by your city check out her brand new tour dates on her Facebook page.
