The next big superhero flick isn't coming from Marvel. Robert Rodriguez, director of 2005's The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D, is making a sequel to his iconic superhero film for Netflix.

Titled We Can Be Heroes, the new film follows a team of superhero descendants—including the children of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. While the original cast will likely only make a brief cameo, we're excited to see what the next generation of the franchise looks like.

Filming started late last year but, thanks to COVID-19 delays, probably won't debut until 2021. Rodriguez shared that the story will follow eleven super children as they fight to save their powerful parents from alien invaders. It sounds just as imaginative as the first film, and we'll get to enjoy updated VFX.

We Can Be Heroes also boasts a star-studded cast to rival the original. Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, Christian Slater, YaYa Gosselin, Akira Akbar, and Pedro Pascal are just a few of the actors lending their talents to the film. In August of last year, Yaya even shared the above group photo of the cast off set.

While we wait for the sequel's release date, we'll be rewatching Sharkboy and Lavagirl on Netflix. As exciting as a sequel is, there's nothing like the silly quirkiness of the original. Remember the dream song?
