Must List
Presenting your pop-punk princess starter pack
If you've spent the last week replaying "Sk8er Boi" from Avril Lavigne's legendary Glastonbury set, this one's for you: We've assembled the ultimate guide for any gal looking to ditch the mainstream and embrace her rebellious side.
Your inspo? Singer/songwriter Abigail Fierce, our fave expert on all things alt. Her credentials? When not rocking out her bright green electric guitar, she's busy composing a whole playlist's worth of indie anthems.
"There's nothing quite like that visceral feeling of putting pen to paper. Expressing yourself through songwriting, art or even just journaling can be like at-home therapy," Abigail says. So when it comes to unapologetic self-expression, it's safe to say she's gone pro.
Ready to find your own inner Miss Fierce? Throw on a coat of black nail polish, lace up your combat boots and let Abigail lead the way.
1. The fit
When it comes to exuding edgy vibes, looking the part is half the battle. Abigail's best fash advice? "The true attitude of a rockstar is to wear whatever you like—and not worry about what other people think about it!"
To assemble a stage-worthy wardrobe of your own, opt for comfort *and* cuteness: "I really like the baggy jeans and crop top combo or wearing a dress over a T-shirt. And you can't go wrong with anything and everything black."
Grab a graphic tee and throw on some distressed denim. Extra points for fishnet tights layered underneath, à la Abigail. Don't forget the final touch: chunky Docs so you can 1) stomp out all your enemies and 2) dance the night away.
2. The music
Abigail's got a song you can scream-sing in Every. Single. Sitch.
Healing from a tough breakup? Stream "I Miss You" and let the tears fall. Convinced your crush is pairing up with the wrong person? Queue "Love You Right," aka a jam for any gal who overthinks her love life. Falling head-over-heels for your neighborhood barista? Yup, she's got a bop for that, too. (It's called "Daphne," you're welcome!)
As for her own curated playlist, Abigail hearts retro artists like Alanis Morissette, Hole, Nirvana, Green Day and Third Eye Blind: "I love the angst in '90s rock—it's music that you can totally immerse yourself in and forget about the world around you."
3. The attitude
Living your best rebel girl life is about more than what's hanging in your closet or blasting in your headphones: You can always spot a true counterculture cutie by her confidence. And that doesn't mean feeling self-assured 24/7 (which is, admittedly, near impossible), but it does mean embracing all that makes you unique, rather than worrying over what others might think.
Abigail's best advice? "Run your race with your blinders on." She lives by this motivational motto—and it's a fab reminder for every girl looking to boldly be herself. "It's easy to get distracted, but try not to waste your time being jealous of someone else. There's no one else in the world like you," she shares.
