6 ways to deal with the sting of rejection

You fell head over heels for that gym class hottie, only to find out he doesn’t feel the same way. It’s a bummer, babe. But it happens to all of us. Don’t let him haunt your dreams forever. Here are six tips to help you move past the sting of rejection.

1. Take time for yourself.
That hurting feeling is normal, but no need to wallow in your sorrows. Have a li’l me, myself and I time. Spa day, movie marathon, journaling—whatever lifts your spirits and gets you-know-who outta your head.

2. Just keep fishing.
There are 7 billion people in this world. That means there are so many other catches better than this one, so don’t let yourself get hung up on one small fry. True, it may feel like there’s no one else right now. But trust us, with all the nice guys out there, you won’t be waiting for too long.

3. Don’t change.
This boy might not be so interested in you, but don’t overhaul your personality or personal style just for him. Wait for the guy to come along who wants you for everything you naturally are. Changing for someone else will never leave you feeling happy or comfortable.

4. Get comfort.
Don’t try to go through the rough process completely alone. Soak up your girls’ pep talks at lunch. Or hit up Starbucks with Mom to see what advice she has up her sleeves. Having support makes getting over a heartbreaking rebuff that much easier.

5. Show him you’re strong.
Don’t let him see you sulking over him. That will make him feel like he has power over you, and he most certainly does not. Have him see that he was just an option, not the only one you’ve ever dreamed of—even if he was. Seeing you mope will only boost his ego. Instead, rev up your own confidence by acting completely unfazed.

6. Find the positive.
Getting rejected gives us a chance to look back and see what went wrong. Was the timing off? Were your convos falling flat? Were you showing too much interest or not enough? Now, this isn’t saying to change yourself. But it’s crucial to evaluate what went right and what went wrong. That way, you’re ready for the next crush who comes your way.
