Ditch vitamin deficiency

What are the signs of vitamin deficiency? If I’m vitamin deficient, what can I do to correct it?

There are so many different vitamins that your body needs that it’s sometimes difficult to make sure you’re getting enough of them on a daily basis. If you’re not, your body might feel a little “off” and be more prone to sickness or infections. The good news? It’s super easy to get back to normal just by figuring out what vitamins you need and where to find them!

Vitamin A
Without Vitamin A, you might lose your appetite, have trouble sleeping, easily get worn out or experience acne and dry skin. Luckily, Vitamin A is very easy to get just by eating five servings of fruits and veggies each day (which you should totally do anyway!). If you eat foods rich in Vitamin A, like apricots and carrots, you’ll be well on your way to having great vision and a strong immune system.

Vitamin C
You might think of Vitamin C as being the “cold-fighting vitamin,” but it has many other uses as well, which include growing and repairing your bones and tissues. Since the signs of Vitamin C deficiency are painful (think cavities, bleeding gums and trouble breathing), it’s best to eat fresh, uncooked fruits and vegetables like strawberries, tomatoes and citrus fruits to get all the Vitamin C you need.

Vitamin D
If you’re lacking strength in your bones and muscles, have trouble sleeping and suffer from eye problems, you may be deficient in Vitamin D. Fortunately, you can get your daily dose of Vitamin D from soaking up the sun for just five to thirty minutes a day (but don’t forget the sunblock!) and eating fish and eggs. It’s that easy!

Eating right isn’t just about looking good. Giving your body the fuel it needs can keep you healthy and active your entire life. If you’re not sure you’re eating the right things to get all the vitamins and minerals you need—and the three listed above are just a few of the biggies—call up your doctor. He or she can tell you if you’re vitamin deficient, and can suggest some good ways to pack those elements into your diet.
