LIFE

Dear Carol

"Dear Carol, can I delete some personal stuff that I posted online?"

Dear Carol,
A while back, I posted stuff online that was personal, like about boys and my body. Is there any way I can delete that stuff? I know you're not tech support, but you know a lot.
–Post Problem

Dear Post Problem,
True, I'm no IT expert, but I do know that while you can delete a post or deactivate an account, you can't really be sure that you erased everything for good. This is why you need to be aware that anything you post really is public. And since people can take screenshots, even deleting later isn't always effective. Going forward, know that when you make a comment, you've told the world how you feel about politics or pimples. Now the good news: Most people stress much more about what they post than what others post. So don't lose sleep, but no more naïveté, either. The internet is a place where reputations can be made—or slayed.
