FEATURE FRIDAY: Portion Control

portion1.jpg

Portion control is the best way to make sure you are eating the right-sized food for your body,” says Carrie Wiatt, nutritionist and owner of Diet Designs.

Controlling how much you eat doesn’t necessarily mean, say, eating just a half cup of pasta at dinner. After all, you’re supposed to have six to 11 servings of grains per day. So if you limit yourself to one serving a meal, you won’t get enough. But it does mean being aware that your plate of spaghetti is probably about two or three servings. But the same goes for good-for-you stuff, too! Five veggies per day? No prob, once you know seven baby carrots is one serving of vegetables. No joke!

Read on for some easy guidelines for some of your fave foods…

Pasta or rice = ½ cup = tennis ball
Bagel = one ounce = hockey puck
Cooked broccoli = ½ cup = scoop of ice cream
Grapes = ½ cup = lightbulb
Apples, oranges, etc. = tennis ball
Peanut butter = 2 tablespoons = golf ball
Cooked meat, fish or poultry = 2-3 ounces = deck of cards
Cheese = 1 ½ to 2 ounces = four dice
Ice cream = ½ cup = baseball
Salad dressing = 1 tablespoon = ping pong ball
French fries = ½ cup = computer mouse

Blog About It... How do you keep your portions under wraps? Have a awesome tip to share?

I eat a little bit of everything on the table. This way, my plate is full, and so is my stomach. Trying a little bit of everything also helps me reach the toal amount of food on the pryamaid.

Sunshine4u on 11/22/2009 11:10:50 AM

great way to put it. really helps!

I usually try to keep the labels of stuff, like pasta. I LOVE pasta, but it is full of carbs and when I eat too much I feel bloated.

This will be great for school

Gabby on 2/8/2008 11:49:18 PM

wow! i eat way more peanut butter than golf ball sized!!! Smile

Abby on 1/30/2008 6:10:38 PM

Olivia-have you told your mom?She could be great help. But if you are scared to,I would try to overcome my fear.I waited about 7 hours before telling my mom,and I went through 5 pairs of pants and underwear! She can tell you exactly what to do.

Harley on 1/27/2008 10:36:58 AM

For some reason my brother eats a lot of junk food but he is skinny!I eat WAY more healthy foods than him and I am a little bit overweight! But I do eat bigger portions than him.

Harley on 1/27/2008 9:47:40 AM

Jenny(from the block) and lucky blonde; you should check out a BMI calculator online because it will tell you if you are at a healthy weight. Jenny if people make fun of you for being to skinny, eat more than your friends because you probably have a high metabolism.

much love girls<3

hollisterhottie on 1/26/2008 9:27:24 PM

the chart is helpful for girls who exercise a regular amount, but since im in cross country running, we run 3+ miles every day and we need to eat a lot more to stay healthy so this chart doesnt help me.

hollisterhottie on 1/26/2008 9:22:00 PM

alicia on 1/26/2008 1:51:15 PM

I'm kind of confused about this stuff. Like, you say you need 6 to 11 servings for grain, but in the chart, it just shows the size...not the servings. I just take a little bit of everything, eat it, & then if I want something else, just eat a little bit more of that.

vanillaBabe on 1/26/2008 1:50:05 PM

This is a helpful comparison....sometimes people don't have time to get out measuring cups, so just estimating that a serving for ice cream is about the size of a baseball is more easy to picture. =D Thanks GL!

Caitlin on 1/26/2008 1:24:05 PM

someone tell me please!

SWEETIE PIE on 1/26/2008 12:03:06 PM

SWEETIE PIE on 1/26/2008 12:01:48 PM

a piece of meat the size of a deck of cards!? that is beyond CRAZY! i need more protein than that! and plus, meat is DELISHIOUS!-no offense to any vegetarions!

SWEETIE PIE on 1/26/2008 11:53:00 AM

Thanks this helps alot! I made a New Year`s resolution to eat healthier and I`ve been keeping it! Almost 4 weeks without pop!!!!

Jenny on 1/26/2008 11:32:49 AM

Mod************************ I have a really hard time figuring out the right amount of cereal.... How can I tell when enough is enough?

Just fill a normal size bowl, if you want check the back of the box and use measuring cups see how much the cereal fills up the bowl and then make a mental note and use that from now on.
Toodles,
Lissy

Amy! on 1/25/2008 5:56:16 PM

I have no idea what lightbulb and all of those other things your comparing food to (except for the icecream).

Music on 1/25/2008 5:29:28 PM

Those are great guidelines!

Brenna on 1/25/2008 5:17:13 PM

When my mom cooks more than one thing, I just a put a little bit of each in the plate... so that at the end it equals one plate of food. This way, you eat less and it doesn't throw you off balance with the amount you usually eat. Even though it's actually less... it gives u the impression that it's more

Olivia on 1/25/2008 4:31:25 PM

Thanks GL! That really helps!
xoxo Kitkat
