Dark Circles Dilemma

I always have ugly dark circles under my eyes. What can I do to get rid of them?!

You're not alone, sistah. A lot of us suffer from those pesky dark circles. Sometimes it's hereditary, other times it can be caused by allergies, lack of sleep or vitamin deficiencies. Fortunately, there's a lot you can do to make them less noticeable or, in some cases, disappear completely!

1. Be healthy! Make sure you're keeping totally hydrated and eating healthy foods. Drinking lots of water will help improve blood circulation and, in turn, make those dark circles not so dark. And getting all the vitamins and nutrients your body needs is important to improving skin. So make sure you're eating your fruits and veggies!

2. Avoid salt. While consuming some salt is OK, eating it in excess can be unhealthy. Too much salt can also be detrimental to your circulation, making your veins appear purple-ish under your skin. Salt is in a lot of prepared foods (and at restaurants) so eating nutritious goodies is key.

3. Don't rub. Stop rubbing those eyes, girl! You could be causing skin irritation which means tiny capillaries just under your skin are breaking, leading to a li’l discoloration.

4. Get your beauty sleep! When you're sleep deprived, your skin appears paler, making dark spots stand out more. Make sure you're getting the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Not only will this help shoo away those dark circles, it'll also have you feeling energized and healthy.

5. Relax. Place cucumber slices or cool tea bags over your eyes for about 10 to 15 minutes once a day. Both have been proved to reduce puffiness and skin discoloration, and give your face an overall fresh feeling! Eye creams containing Vitamin K and retinol are also really helpful.

6. Cover them up! Still not getting better? Pick up an under eye concealer. We like this one by Physician’s Formula. Dust some mineral powder over it and go.

MODMODMOD I want to chop off all my hair. Like an inch long short. My mom thinks I'll regret it but I've had hair up to mid-ear and loved it. What do you think? What if people think I'm a boy? You have to be REALLY pretty to pull it off... Should I wait until it's a bit more "clear" I'm a girl from my... chest..? If you think I should go for it, know any websites for good tween hairstyles? Thanks!

Hey girl! If you think you would like it, go for it! The good thing is it's just hair so if it turns out you don't like it, it will grow back so quickly!

I'm kind of scared to try eye make up because I'm afraid it won't look good on me. I have short-ish brown hair, blue eyes, and fair, pinkish skin. What makeup would look best on me?

Hey girl! You won't know what anything will look like, unless you experiment. You could try black or brown eyeliner and mascara. You can experiemnt with different shades of eye shadows so that you can decide what color you like the best.

I have had dark circles under my eyes for years, and no amount of sleep, water-drinking, or concealing covers them up well.

what products (creams, serums, ect) help reduce dark circles?

Hey missy, I love giving myself manis and pedis. I always start with my hair, I give it a good long wash with conditioning shampoo. Then I was my face really good, (you could search GL and the net for homemade facial peels), and I finish with my nails.

I know this has been a question before, but how long can you have mascara before you throw it out? My mom says two months but my friends say only two weeks! Help, I don't want to get an eye infection!

Hey girl, typically, most mascara is good for four months. After that, it starts to dry out, making it the perf time to buy a new tube.

another reason not to rub your eyes----
at camp we have this indoor rock climbing this where they turn on black lights (they're the ones that makes white glow) and under the black lights my camp counsellor had this stuff all around her eyes and it was glowing green!!! turns out her and this girl sat on a bench with some rust or something on it and then she rubbed her eyes. we claimed she was a witch.

so you never know what you're rubbing on your eyes.

kgirlpanda on 8/4/2009 1:38:24 PM

Hey MOD? For the last 5 years of my life I've never had a real problem with pimples/zits/breaking out/whatever. I've never had that much to deal with, and I take pretty good care of my skin. Sadly, my mother has really sensitive skin, so she thinks that in a few years, my skin will start breaking out from anything I put on my face that isn't organic, or just stuff in general that doesn't work on her face. Now my face is starting to get some more acne, and I'm a bit afraid because I really want to control it before it gets bad. What can I do aside from washing my face? Any good acne products that are OK for sensitive skin?

The best solution to this problem would be to go to the drug store and try a bunch of acne products that are specific to sensitive skin and see which one works best for you and your skin.  I myself use a Clean & Clear Astringent for sensitive skin twice a day after washing my face!  Make sure your being super careful, however, as a lot of acne medications can dry out your skin, so make sure you are using face mouisturizer as well!  If it becomes really bad, ask Mom to take you to the skin doctor and see what medications he prescribes!

i have this problem too!

1. cover them up with a coverup a shade or 2 lighter than your skin tone, so they are completely covered, even if the lighter shade doesn't exactly blend in. i use fresh complexion under eye concealer from covergirl!

2. Go on top of that with a concealer/foundation that matches your skin tone. i use advanced radiance age-defying liquid make up by covergirl.

it solves my problem! and getting sleep is crucial too.

blondenotdumb on 7/30/2009 11:36:32 PM

i have dark circles, they're genetic though.
my family is italian, so that's what you get... Smile
you don't really need special "under eye concealer" though. I use Covergirl foundation---but it's just a shade lighter then my skin tone, and it works pretty well.

I keep having nightmares schools all ready here! how can I stop from worrying myself

Hey girl,

Take a deep breath. While it may be way too easy to think about the future, remember what's right in front of you right now. It's summer vacay so go outside and have a 'lil fun. If you're stressed about the new year, try talking it out with a friend or exercising--they're bound to give your mood a lift and some comfort. Remember, back-to-school can be a super fun thing--new materials, new clothes, new friends, etc. Think about the good parts of school and live day-by-day. It'll all be okay!

Hey girl,

I can't say exactly but I know you can. For a perf diagnosis, try showing them to your folks or a doctor. They'll know not only what they are but how to treat 'em.

Tomorrow I'm going to this water park with a bunch of water slides and I'm totally freaked out because when I was younger, I went with my mom on the water slide and nearly fell off....please help!
Thanks!

Hey girl,

Sometimes it can be hard going somewhere where your past may not have been so perfect. Remember that what happened before was just that one time--just because you nearly fell off there doesn't mean you'll fall off again. Go with a friend the first time you go down the slide to do it together. Chances are, you'll find there was nothing to be afraid of in the first place. Have fun and don't worry! Your friends are with you and chances are there's lifeguards looking out for you too!

There is a concert type of thing in my town on Saturday. It's at night and outside. The weather is supposed to be 80 as a high, 60 as a low. What would a good outfit be? Also, what would be good hair? I was thinking of making it straight, I really like my hair like that. Accessories too please. Thank you soooo much! You all do great at GL so thank you again!!!
Kayla

Hey girl,

The concert sounds way fun! With it being a night, the temperature is going to drop. Try wearing a cute summer dress and bring a light sweater along just in case it gets a little chilly. Dress your outfit up with long necklaces and matching bracelets. As for the hair, I'm a headband girl myself, but for a way cute (and unique) look, try incorporating a braid into a half up, half down look with straight hair. You're bound to look stunning! Have fun!

MOD MOD MOD-
Is it bad to shave my stomach?
And what are these bumps when i do shave (like my legs, arms, stomach) ((and also its not because of the razor because its new)).
Alsooo, what should i wear on the first day of school? I want it to be girly, but not all the waaay out there.
Thanks,
-Pomi[:

Hey girl,

It's def not bad you shave there, but you don't have to. Remember with any area you shave, once you take the hair off, it's bound to grow back faster. As for the shaving bumps, it may be because of the shaving cream you're using (or not using). Try using a different brand or using lotion after. As for the first day of school outfit, why not wear a tank dress with a way cute necklace? Try going shopping with your friends and get their opinions on your outfit and multiple looks. Find a look that's all your own and get as many opinions as you can on it to make a big splash on your first day back!

Hey girl,

The best way to make new friends is to be sure to greet as many people as you can and to be yourself. Be confident and get involved with activities you're interested in (sports, etc.) Be sure to talk to as many of your classmates as you can and be open. With a sweet smile and tons of friendly conversation, you're bound to stand out and look totally confident!
