I feel sick in health class...help!

Check these out, too...

  • In the News: First day nightmare
  • Violence on TV freaks me out
  • What freaks you out? Spill the deets!
  • Words to remember when life gets scary

Whenever I think or hear about something uncomfortable involving the body in any way, I feel physically sick. For example, in school we were learning about the skeletal system and my body ached all over.

When we learned about the heart and lungs, my chest hurt. Is this normal?

Hey chica,

Sounds like you have a phobia—but don’t worry too much. Pretty much everyone has a kinda out-there issue with something. FYI: A phobia is what docs call “your fears.” Some peeps are scared of bugs, spiders, blood, heights, small spaces, swimming and even soap (eek!). Each phobia has a longer scientific name, too. So no worries, you’re not alone!

Fear not!

I have a phobia, too (see! I told ya you weren't the only one). I am horrified of needles; every time I see one I cringe—sometimes I even pass out. When I see pics of a needles in text books or on TV, I always turn away or put my hand over it. The worst is when I have to get shots or my blood taken by a doc—ugh!

How to cope

The first step is admitting your problem, or in your case, your fear. You know what it is that grosses you out, so that’s a good place to start. Try avoiding sitches where you know body parts are mentioned, like certain TV shows, movies and books. If you see something that grosses you out, look away and ask your friends to tell you when it’s over. Or, try to think happy, calming thoughts (spring break, anyone?).

Everybody's body...

Yeah, there are certain things about the body that are a li'l gross and could give ya the heebie-jeebies. But just 'cause there are a zillion and one diseases and things that could go wrong out there, doesn't mean that they're going to happen to YOU. Just try to relax and feel at peace with your own body. If you're still not OK with things, you could also try talking to your teachers and maybe they can find alternative ways for you to learn.

Help from pros

If you think the problem is getting worse, talk it out with a guidance counselor or trusted adult. The last thing you want is to feel like you’re missing out on things in life because of your fears. I'm sure they'll have all sorts of ways to get past it, and just spilling about it will help you feel tons better.

Okay- so my boyfriend and I were gonna go see a new movie tonight at midnight. (Well not really new but yeah we're gonna watch breaking dawn part 2) but honestly I'm not feeling very good. I got the second dose of the HPV shot on Thursday and since then my arms have been so sore. i also kinda have a cold. I don't want to disapoint him because he seems very excited. What should I tell him?

Hey girl,

If you're not feeling well, your boyfriend will understand! He would probably rather spend time with you when you are feeling better so you can have more fun on your date. The movie will be the same whether you see it tonight or next week, so tell him you need to rest and get better and that you want to see it soon!

I get anxiety sometimes and scratch the sides of my face. If there are pimples there, I scratch them until they scar. I've tried everything, stress ball, keeping my hands busy, but it's addicting! Help!

I think you should say something to your doctor. They might be able to help you deal with this issue. xoxo kerra

I get that a bit sometimes too. Like when people talk about bones or blood My knees feel weak and I feel like I can't move or I'll injure myself. It passes with time, just remind yourself that you are perfectly healthy and just think about something else for a while. It also helps to sit or lie down if you feel this way.

I have a fear of going down escalators. I just can't get on! The steps move 2 fast! I have 2 hold my moms hand 2 get on, and 1 time when I was at the mall w/ my BFF and her mom I had 2 hold her moms hand. I'm getting over my fear, though! Also I'm afraid of snakes. I barely survived the 2nd and 7th HP movies.

Please answer this time because I've asked many times. I have a big tangle in my hair and I don't want to tell my mom or go to a salon, so how do I cut it off, because I can't comb, or brush it. PS-Detangling products don't work either.

Hey girl, Why can't you tell your mom or go to a salon? That would probably be the best option. Maybe you could try working on it with some extra-strength conditioner? I think it's a little risky to cut your own hair, especially depending on where it is on your hair, because it might not blend in with the rest of your hair if you cut a part out.

Hey girl! My health class was all about healthy eating, healthy living, etc. It doesn't necessarily mean it's a sex ed class. Usually those happen in 11th or 12th grade.

~~MOD~~MOD~~MOD~~ Hey Mod, sorry to bother you. I went to the dentist today and they said my wisdom teeth are coming in alot faster than most people, I'm only 14! They said I'll need to get them pulled out next appointment, which is next year. I'm already nervous. If I get put to sleep during the process, will I feel anything happening? And does it hurt really bad afterward? One more question. Do your cheeks get puffy for a while following the appointment? Please help me!! Love, NeverLoseHope Smile

Hey girl! It's totally normal procedure and tons of kids go through it every year. Better sooner, too. You should consider yourself lucky! Everyone reacts differenly after the surgery but your cheeks may be puffy.

For the over sweating, you should try to get a deodorant that will help with it. If you smell good, youll feel better about it. As for the weight, just try your hardest to stay active and shed off the extra pounds so youll feel better. Good luck! xoxo kerra

Hey girl! Go for foods high in protein that will help you stay at a good weight, give you energy, and not gain any fat. Try talking to a doc about the specifics for your body!

Awkward and weird!

I know it can be awkward in health, believe me I do. Just recently we went over the whole std thing and we had a class where our teacher showed real pictures of what std's look like on the 'down there' parts of guys. Maybe if it was only one or two pictures but it was a bunch of them and you saw everything and by the end I know the guys were embarrassed and a lot of us girls were amazed and some grossed out. My mom actually said our teacher did that so we can see what can happen if we make bad choices at our age.

I dont think it was that bad but I did ask her why she didnt show pictures of problems on our 'down there' parts. In some ways I am glad she didnt because I think the guys would be making so much fun of seeing that in class.

so my best friends mom has cancer. She told me that they are doing surgery on her march 17, but the surgery isn't going to help. The doctors said the cancer spread to her lungs and their is a bunch of tiny cancer spots so they can't remove it because it's not big enough to take out. Also they rold her that this cancer is untreatable. My friend is going through a really tough situation. I want to help her but i feel so useless.I told her if she ever needs anything to just call me and i am their, also i told her i am always here if she wants a shoulder to cry on. She was crying at school on friday. Do you have any suggestions of how i can help her?

THANKS!! ps sorry this was long..

Hey girlfriend, remember it's okay to not be the life of the party all the time. Sometimes it's okay to let someone start a convo or let someone else have the attention. But when you do feel like being the center, remember that the people are just like your girlfriends. You all are teens and talk about the same things so act as if you're chatting with your homegurls. If you get tongue-tied think of some of the things you chat about with your friends and bring that stuff up. Hope this helps! x0x0

I feel like I actually disappointed him and even started to cry. I can tell when people are joking, but I physically overreact a lot, even though my mind is fine. Is this a a serious problem? How can I say that I can't take that kind of joke? Thanks! I love my dad, but I can't even read over this question without feeling sad.

Hey girlfriend, you just seem a little sensitive. Whenever people crack jokes just remind yourself it's a joke. Nothing serious. You know that deep down they love you and are just trying to make you laugh. Maybe you should ask your friends and fam to not make som many jokes since they get you upset. Hope ya feel better! x0x0

Moderator: I have to write a speech that's due tomorrow. The theme is "If I Were President..." I'm completely stuck. Do you have any tips that you could give me on being President? Thanks(:

Hey chica, I know writing isn't my thing either. But try to think about something the president isn't doing, that you think he should be and write about that. If you thought he should work on healthcare more, you could write about what you would do to make healthcare better in America. Just jot down some ideas and pick which is the best. Smile
