The Best Way to Veg Out

Check these out, too...

  • Food for thought: Are French fries dumbing ya down?
  • 5 signs McDonald's isn't as healthy as they say
  • Green meanies: How to make veggies taste good

Considering going green? Whether you can’t imagine noshing on cute animals, wanna slash your impact on the Earth or eat in a more heart-healthy way, GL’s got the dirt on doing it right.

Plan Like a Pro
When you go veggie, you need to take extra time to plan your meals. The school caf, restaurants or your relatives’ houses may not always be ready for your meat-free ways. Pack your own well-balanced lunches for school and call ahead before you eat out—good restaurants will be able to let you know what veggie-only meals they have. Extended fam isn’t veg-friendly? Volunteer to whip up a yummy vegetable side to share.

Rock the Whole Range
Don’t just restrict yourself to iceberg salads or the bagels you find at the snack bar. Every meal should include a ton of color and variety. Try scrambled tofu with peppers and salsa in the a.m., soup or chili with beans for lunch and whole-wheat noodles with veggies and spices for din. Invest in a cookbook to keep it fresh (we dig OK, So Now You’re a Vegetarian, $12, amazon.com).

Geek Out on those Greens
Veggie girls gotta eat smart to make up for the nutrients normally found in meat. Dark leafy greens (kale, chard), dairy, beans and lentils are stellar substitutes, so incorporate ’em into your meals. Talk to your doc about whether you should take a vitamin, too.

Be flexible
Not ready to go full-on veggie? Then, um, don’t. Be a flexitarian (they try to avoid meat), cut out red meat or take the “Meatless Mondays” challenge by simply eliminating the stuff once a week. Any way you slice it, adding greens to your diet is always a plus.

I am thinking of going vegetarian, and these seem like great tips! However: I am a family-oriented girl (as in, I am a total pushover when it comes to the 'rents) and I am afraid that I'll hurt their feelings/make them mad by telling them that I want to veg out. This is pretty important to me: any tips on how to help my parents feel okay with my decision, and how to keep the peace in a meat-chowing fam?

Also, you can just eat white meat (chicken), or just eat sea food.

(*is going kosher instead*)

If I can give any advice, DON'T JUMP INTO DECISIONS LIKE THIS. This is life-impacting stuff. Research. Study. Just because you feel guilty eating animals doesn't mean you should suddenly spring the news that you're going veggie on your parents at the dinner table. Just... be informed and be smart. ;)

MOD MOD MOD!!!!!!
My sister is a vegetarian, my mom is not. I am not debating if i want to become one or not. i just stopped eating meat because i am against what the do to animals. i know i can avoid meat.... but still. I feel like if i did choose to become a vegetarian my mom would be not as excited about it in a way because it might be harder to her. I'm not sure what to do. I told her that right now im testing it out. (its been 1 week now). I know you cant make a decision for me, but any help would be nice

Hey girl,

You're right - becoming a vegetarian or vegan is a very personal decision, but what I can do is try to make you feel better about your choice. You feel opposed to the way they treat the animals and know you would feel better if you stopped eating meat. The great thing about moms is they support us and our decisions - especially when it comes to trying to be a better person/make the world a better place! I'm not a vegetarian, but I know if I sat down with my mom and explained the reasons behind the decision if I ever made it, she would totally respect that. If you feel bad, try offering to help her grocery shop/cook for you and your sister. And also offer recipes for the whole family that don't use meat but are still well-rounded and super yummy. It's totally possible to be a veggie in a household of meat-eaters - it just takes dedication, which I know you've got! <3

MOD!
I soooo wish i was a vegetarian, I love animals. It makes me want to cry when I eat meat, my dad tells me to think of it as a mean pig, but I can't do it!!What should I do to become a vegetarian!?!?!?

Hey! Unfortunately while you're with your parents you have to eat what they cook, unless you learn to cook your own veggie meals. but when you're at school or out with friends  you can make vegetarian selections Smile

MOD MOD Smile
OKk so my dad has a double chin and I of course had to inherit it from him!! UGH my mom told me it would be hard to get rid of, but how could I get rid of it? It's not that bad just, really REALLY annoying. Everyone says it's barely noticable, but you know, since i am me, it's way more visible. HELP Smile Thanks a bunch, I love GL Smile

Hey! You know, it's easy to criticize our own appearances, but try this and see if it works: Even if you really don't like it, Try saying to yourself "I love my double chin" when you see it when you wake up. Yeah it sounds dumb, but accepting yourself for who you are is the only way to really be happy with your appearance. Changing the way you look is not the answer.

We should all eat less animal products, including drinking less milk but not because we think we shouldnt be eating them but because its healthy to eat more fruits and veggies.

Nothing is better for our bodies than eating healthy and exercising.

I forgot to add that I think this article would be very helpful for people who don't know much about this topic yet. I also think that being a flexatarian is great if becoming vegetarian is too hard for someone, or if they just don't want to become vegetarian, but want to eat more things like veggies, beans and grains and less animal products.

I was brought up as a vegetarian and earlyer this year I became vegan, so I didn't learn anything from this; but I hadn't been thinking about eating dark leafy greens, so that was a nice reminder. I also want to get that book from the library.

I want to play volleyball this year, but it would be my first year, so I wanna get in shape before the season starts! What can I do to shape up, because I HATE running! Also, what foods can I eat that will give me alot of energy and how can I avoid junkfood???

Hey girlie instead of running try walking quickly instead. Eat a lot of fruit and snacks like granola bars that taste as good as junk food, but are better for you.

I decided to go Vegetarian about a year ago. Wasn't hard for me. I love being it. My family is annoying about it sometimes though. My brother is the most and my parents just don't understand the point of it. But whatever because all I know is I love being vegetarian and that's all that matters.
