What to do tonight: View Venus--it's the chance of a lifetime!

Check these out, too...

  • We wanna know...your most embarrassing school moment
  • 5 cinchy ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo
  • Get your draw on with the prettiest coloring book of the season
  • 10 ways to rock it this spring
  • 25 things to do before school lets out
What are you doin’ tonight from 6 p.m. ‘til sundown? Well, whatever fun plans you’ve got, think about fitting in a little time to check out Venus as it passes between the Earth and the Sun. Tonight will be your only chance to see the planet make this move until December 2117. But be careful because you shouldn’t be looking at the Sun with your naked eye, or even with some sweet shades. In order to see this super-cool planet, you need to make yourself a projector using some binoculars. Here’s how:

1. Grab some duct tape, and attach a pair of binoculars to a tripod.

2. Get a piece of cardboard. Trace the front circles (meaning the large end) of the binoculars on it, and cut them out.

3. Stick the binoculars through the holes you cut out, and tape the cardboard in place.

4. Put the lens cap on one of the binocular lenses, or just tape over it. (You’re only gonna need one to view the Sun.)

5. Plug any holes in the cardboard or around the lenses with more duct tape.

6. Get a white piece of cardboard, and hold it about a foot away from the back end (the small part) of the binoculars.

7. Scooch the tripod around ‘til ya see a pic of the Sun on your cardboard, and then you can focus the binoculars to make it clearer.

8. Watch history unfold as Venus makes its move!

Just a note – be careful not to put your hands or anything that might catch fire near the back lens of your binoculars. That’s some strong Sun you’re catchin’ there, and ya don’t want it to burn anything. In fact, you might wanna move your binoculars out of the sun for a little bit, just to give them a break from the heat every once in a while. They could get messed up if ya keep ‘em trained on that burnin’ ball all night.

For more viewing tips, check out MSNBC’s awesome guide to the Venus transit HERE. Will you be watching this afternoon?

Mod? Is it true that Michigan and Indiana were the best spots to see the solar eclipse because I live in Michigan and when I was shooting hoops in my backyard at 4ish or 5ish, I felt the sun's rays very heaavy on me and I got my uncles 60$ dollar sun glasses which helps the sun's rays from hurting and destroying your pupils or something and watched it happen! Laughing

Hey girl,

That is awesome! I'm not sure where the best places were to see it (not a scientist - but I think it's really interesting), but I'm so glad you got to!!!

we've been talking about this in science class for a while and this one kid who's super into astronomy gave a presentation on it after school. i was so upset b/c i don't have a welding mask or binoculars or anything, but then a guy came into the library with a picture he'd taken with his telescope. it's not the same as viewing it firsthand, but it was still pretty cool.

OMG I just saw it today. It was SO amazing! I used my dads #14 welding glasses to look directly at the sun. You could see a little black dot moving across the sky. It was sooo cool! I'm excited that I got to view the once-in-a-life-time passing of VenusSmile

Cool!

I just did that with my Dad! But we made it easier: Somehow cover one of the large ends of your binoculars. Point the remaining one at the sun. (There can't be many clouds or trees covering the sun.) put a piece of white paper about a foot away from the small end of the binoculars. Focus until you see the sun. Venus will be a tiny black dot on the sun. This won't happen again for 90 years, so go do it! Smile

Hey svds, just tell him you had other activites you were involved with. I'm pretty sure he'll be happy you've decided to take ballet again. No worries. Xoxo

MOD MOD MOD
I quit my ballet last semester. I'm rejoining this semester. I have the same teacher. How do I explain to the teacher when he asks why I quit originally without hurting his feelings? I had things I wanted to do more.
I posted this question before and I took a lot of time to craft it in more detail using up all the characters along with another question. Kinda bummed it didn't post and you guys may not answer this question in time. If you do end up posting the other one, ig just delete this one. Lynae P.

so there is thos guy i really like but he moved last year. Everyone said he is comeing back next year.I have his number but he doesnt text back. I dont know why he doesnt because everyone says he loves me back but what do u think i should do? Do i keep texting him or give up?

Hey Babe!

That's awesome that he is moving back! It's possible his cell phone number changed, but he also might be too busy with his new friends to respond. Does he have a Facebook? Try messaging him there and if he doesn't respond, wait until the school year starts to try and make contact.
